ok having gotten rid of my ps3 am kinda feeling it's departure :(

am looking at building a 2nd hand HTPC to deal with streaming dutys between my PC and my flat screen, i want something that will handle 1080P easily, and be mildly quiet, dont need total silence, i'm not that picky

would i be over optemistic in believing that a old socket 478 Pentium 4 single core type system be able to handle this type of thing?

i want to keep costs down so 2nd hand preferably, DDR2 based system would be better

i've got a spare PC case which could do the job on a M-atx based system or would be happy with a SFF case for ITX systems

any ideas or advice would be appreciated :)

top end budget is about £150 has to include blu ray drive, dont need screen, keyboard or a mouse or an OS for that matter

If you use XBMC it has GPU accelleration. I use a passive Radeon 5450. I have a low power Athlon 4400+ on my HTPC. (3 years old and low end then) and it will decode any 1080p stuff I throw at it.

The most expensive thing you will have to budget for is the Blu-Ray drive.

GPU acceleration doesnt work for radeon cards i think (will need confirmation tho)

Using XBMC the new Dharma version with Dxva2 enabled it most certainly does and does it really well. Our HTPC set up is with a HD4550 low profile silent card.
