My mum bought a msi netbook today, with an upgrade for windows 7 starter to home premium. But the netbook came installed with xp :s, to our surprise :\

There isnt a option to upgrade to windows 7 from xp, on the netbook, or in most normal ways.

but im wondering if i can download windows 7, and then use the upgrade key to register it, would that work?

Also can you still download windows 7 from a official source?

I think you should probably just take it back to the store and see what they can do, surely if they provided the Starter > Home Premium, W7 Starter should have already of been pre-installed ready for initial startup? at least that was what it was like for my Acer D255, but with no upgrade key :( (was not an option, so no ones fault there :))

If it is Windows 7 Upgrade you shouldn't need any tricks, since it will accept XP as a valid previous OS to upgrade from. The "upgrade" process will basically be a clean install, but you don't have to trick it or anything.

oh cool, i do need to download windows 7 and put it on a usb drive though, as the upgrade thing was just a box, brief instructions and a code
