Bit of a quandary, 4080 16Gb or 3090?

Should have the money within the next month and am undecided whether to go for a 4080 or 3090, AMD are off the cards, if you excuse the pun, as the software I use is CUDA only. Am leaning more towards a 3090 as it has more VRAM and the software I am using really munches through memory, I do play a couple of games and am using a 1440 monitor, the games being CP 2077 and run it on a potato Doom Eternal. What would you do in my position?

Me? A 3090. It also has more CUDA cores than either 4080 variants I believe which sounds like it'll be important to you (I'm not sure how the new architecture affects that?)

Then again I'm still running a 1080 so what do I know? :D

You answered it yourself there. The 3090 is the one. I'm in the same situation as software I use is all CUDA based for my work. Try grab a 3090/3090ti before the prices get silly again.

That's' better than my 1070 Ti that I had to resort to using after my 3070 died, at the moment am playing CP 2077 through GFNow, it's surprisingly good. The software I am using is called Stable Diffusion and uses AI to generate images from keywords, with 8Gb of memory I am limited to a maximum image size of 576x576, using Video2x I can blow the images up by about 4x and still maintain detail and quality.

Oooh now that is interesting, thanks for that I may just lose myself down that rabbit hole sometime this weekend.

Here are a few images based around the keywords "metal beetle insect" all images are unique and copyright free. Edit, you want the Stable Diffusion Grisk download as hit has a basic GUI.

How necessary is the extra vram really? Imo it all hinges on how good DLSS 3 pans out to be, because the potential gains there are massive. The 4080 should be better than a 3090 regardless, but I assume you'd also get the 3090 for less.

The card will be used mostly for art and a few games, the memory is for Stable Diffusion which eats memory, so DLSS is of little importance to me.

Is Stable Diffusion free to use?
I have seen a few things popping up around AI pictures and it sounds interesting to pop keywords in and see what comes out the other side.
However the ones I have seen require you to sign up, get only a few tries and then have to pay!

Yes Stable Diffusion is totally free, am not too sure if I am allowed to externally link to it, but do a search for Stable Diffusion Grisk and you will find it.

@13oots2 what is the rest of your spec as you need a decent PSU for the 3090. (mine just needs 2 x 8pin like 'normal') I've been trying to follow the power requirements for the 4xxx series but it still seems a tad confusing to me at the moment but going for a 4080 you also need to consider the power supply and cabling.
"Each GeForce RTX 40 Series Founders Edition graphics card reduces cable clutter by leveraging the new standard GPU power input of next-gen ATX 3.0 power supplies, the PCIe Gen-5 16-pin Connector. This enables you to power GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards with just a single cable, improving the aesthetics of your build. If you are using a previous-gen power supply, an adapter cable is included in the box, allowing you to plug in three 8-pin power connectors, with an optional fourth connector for more overclocking headroom. ATX 3.0 power supplies will be available in October from ASUS, Cooler Master, FSP, Gigabyte, iBuyPower, MSI, Silverstone, and ThermalTake, with more models to come."

This is some weird weird software you could end up playing with this all night to see what it outputs. You are right it eats up the 24gb VRAM no problem.

This is my image, I call it "RTX 4080 v RTX 3090"

I have a 1200W Zalman supply and am running an overclocked 10980XE, I should be okay for a 3090 looking at some power calculators. am not too sure on a 4080.

Hold off and snap up a used 3090 with some warranty remaining when the Joneses offload theirs due to FOMO with the 4 series.
