bit of a tricky one..

hello I have a laptop with Windows xp on it and I am going to migrate to a new laptop as this one is on its way out, the new laptop will also have xp on it.

now since the oRiginal laptop is quite old I've lost some of the software discs for certain programs. What I need is a way to get them programs working on the new laptop.I can't copy and paste since some of them have files in the system 32 directory.

are there any programs available that will do this for me or will Windows backup or some kind of hard disk cloning program work?

Install the software again ? You will have to find copies of it / serial numbers of purchased software.

Is the new laptop brand new, or just newer? I suppose what I'm asking is how come it's got XP on it?

newer laptop it's used for business and needs a serial port so a brand new laptop is out the question

This may help.

Creating a Virtual Image of the current laptop and then using virtual box on the new laptop. You should be able to map the ports etc also. This may be your only solution if you cannot find the installation media.

acronis true image with plus pack offers universal restore (if you know someone that alrady has is they can burn you a boot disk)

I have used it loads of times works a treat

image a 10year old SBS scsi server and restore it to a brand new sata PC it strips out all the drivers and puts generic ones in (or the corect ones if you ahve them)

interesting will 1.5gb system ram be enough to load a virtual image.

It depends what type of tasks you're doing to be honest (my suggestion was going to be virtualise the old box too)

I wouldn't rule out Acronis and universal restore yet though as suggested. What sort of Windows license is it?

almost 10 years old with broken keys, fan barely working and taking an age to start up and all this with no internet access so it's more then just your common problems.

at the moment were trying to contact the manufacturers of the oRiginal software programs if we can get most of the software on board then we Won't need to clone the hard disk
