Bit of advice please

Hi guys, I’m new around here and just looking for a bit of advice.
I want to replace my current pc and I’m thinking about building my own if it would work out to be cheaper and worth the effort considering what I need it for.
I don’t really use my pc for anything particularly processor intensive but I do tend to use it for several things at once (listening to music, playing football manager, browsing the net, etc) and my computer just can’t handle all that any more.
As you can see I don’t really need anything too special and I’m sure most off-the-shelf setups would be fine for what I need but I don’t really want all the extra bells and whistles they throw in so I wanted you guys to help me spec up a system that would be suitable for what I want.
I don’t really want to spend loads because of the way I use it and I’ve got a monitor, mouse and keyboard that are ok for now. I guess I can budget up to around £350-£400 but I’d like to spend less if possible. I just want it to be able to do everything I want smoothly and to last for a while but I’m not really sure what the best setup for this would be (dual core, quad core, vista, xp etc) so any advice would be great.

Thanks

may i direct you to this thread, and more specifically the £300 spec, it'll be more than enough for your needs, and is upgradeable to a degree, you can use the OS from your current PC (if you have the retail disc, or you'd need to buy (at least) an OEM disc of vista home (premium i recommend) 32bit, or windows XP SP2 32bit, for between £60 and £80)

hope that helps

thanks, thats given me a good idea of what to expect.
I do like the look of the £500 tower though, especially the quiet power supply as my current pc makes a lot of noise. is there any way to bring the cost of that one down nearer to about £400 without losing much or any performance? maybe with a cheaper graphics card and case, smaller hard drive or anything?
I did have a look around the site but i'm new to this so i don't know which parts are compatible with other parts??

don't forget you're going to need an operating system as well, so that's another £80.

have a look at this, should be everything you need:

you can shave some off by dropping to 2GB instead of 4GB, and recycling the hard drive/optical drive from your current PC and changing the processor from the 6000 to the 5200. of you do that it becomes £449.57

and you can recoup a bit of the cost by selling your old stuff ;)

hmm.. hard drive i suppose i could reuse, optical drive defo needs replacing. Not sure anyone would want to buy any of my old stuff as its 3-4 years old. Thanks for your help, think i'll keep looking around to see if anything catches my eye and check to see if my finances will stretch a bit further.

what is the spec of your current PC, lots of older stuff gets sold on the MM (useful for media centers, PCs for the kids/parents, things like that).

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0Ghz)
1.18Gb RAM
DVD R/RW and DVD Rom that sounds like its full of sand
Radeon 9200 (I think) graphics card that doesnt register anymore
183Gb hard drive

I could keep the hard drive but the DVD rom is knackered, DVD RW is on its way out, Graphics card has had it i think and i dunno about the proccessor, cant imagine anyone would want it though, surely its well out of date now?

oh dear, sounds like you've used it well :), i'm sure the processor could be sold, but you need a certain post count/length of membership before you can access the MM here.

it's probably just best if you say the most you want to spend so there is something to work to?

oh yes i've definitely got my moneys worth out of it :D

I suppose the maximum i could stretch to is £500 but i would prefer to spend less as i said because i dont really do anything too taxing on it. But saying that i do want something that will run quietly and handle running lots of programs at once and will last me a while like this one has.

well, if you don't want it for anything too intensive (ie internet, music, the odd game) then i've got it down to £434, so you can add some extra bits if you want, or just save the difference

I don't thinks its anything too intensive, Football manager is about the only game i play on my pc and i've normally got 2 or 3 firefox windows open. Maybe winamp playing in the background but thats about as intensive as it gets. I assume the spec you just posted would be able to handle that no problem right? I suppose maybe add a bit of extra ram and that setup is looking pretty appealing. Thanks for your help Vincent

that setup will handle pretty much anything it sounds like you want to do, i wouldn't even worry about extra RAM, 2GB was what the majority of gamers were using until recently, and it's more than enough for the average user :)

hope you get it all sorted mate and glad to help :)
