So, I said a few weeks back I was going to start the modification of my Cooper S, so over the past couple of weeks i've done just that...

I'll start with last weekends mod, simple but makes a fair bit of difference to noise as well as a little extra throttle response.

1x K&N Ultrik Cold Air Intake to replace the standard Airbox - Certainly a bargain for £50 inc fitting from a mate!

Now the next mod is very much a Marmite mod, a lot of people say things like 'You don't need lights to change gear" etc etc (Fox I can hear you already!!) but for me I love the look of them, and to me it's made the dashboard a little different and because BMW are now discontinuing a lot of the R53 JCW Retro Kits as well as more mainstream parts, i've wanted one of these for ages but just never got around to doing it before I went into BMW the other week and they told me they didn't stock them anymore so I had to import this from the USA (One of their last ones i'm told) you can fit the R56 version to my shape but I prefer this one:

The JCW Gearshift Indicator Retro kit :) it's set to around 6500rpm (7.2 is the actual rev limit) and can be changed as you want (Albeit that involves yanking the whole dash out) the kit was about 1.5hrs work to get in, I know a good auto electrician and he and I did it..

Next on the cards is the 15% Supercharger pulley reduction (Not going for the 17% as I cba upgrading my Intercooler) and then possibly a Miltek Exhaust.

Need to keep it on hold for the moment though as today my Manifold started leaking... I think the car was telling me something as I drilled it's dash to get the indicator in!!) so that's gotta be replaced first!

I dont understand the desire for the shift lights, but surely if you are going to have them you have them set at a fraction below the rev limiter so that you never hit it, rather than miles below it? Or has the engine run out of steam by then?

6.5 seemed about right (it was the next setting down from the Rev Limiter) like I said though it can always be tweeked, now I know how to pull the bits out on the dash it's only a 15 minute job.

The ctr comes with shift lights as standard at 8krpm :D!!

West how much do you think the milktek exhaust will cost you fitted? I've been tempted in the past!!

I must admit I like the shift lights there. Also what sort of power would you be looking at with the 15% reduction pulley?

Milteks for the Cooper S start at around £500 (Then add fitting - but I can get that done by someone in the club)

Gains can vary, it's advertised at around 3-5psi extra boost and 20WHP so with the CAI and the Exhaust I can expect to be pushing around the 210bhp zone (Car is 170bhp standard)

Depends on what type of car, or driving, it's involved in - a lot of racers I know set theirs for peak torque or power to keep the car going, rather than needlessly running it up to the redline each time.

Also - if you set it for the limiter, it's not much good - because by the time it's come on, and you've reacted to it, you're already there - so you set it a little below to give you that window to initiate and complete the change :)
