basically his windows has died, so hes running auditor live cd (which is GNU bash 3 - if that means much ;)) and he is trying to mount a usb hard drive but it says :

mount: /mnt/sda1 is not a block device

his hd is in NTFS any ideas (sorry i dont really know much bout this stuff, more of a windwos man myself so any vagueness is 'cause of that)

cheers for your help

the hard disk is definitely "sda"? tbh if your doing system recovery you may be easier using a system with GUI tools such as Knoppix. Also the output from "dmesg", esp the tail end (pardon the pun) might come in handy for diagnosing WHY auditor live CD isnt liking his USB hard disk.

p.s. If you are planning on writing to the external disk its probably better to have it in FAT32 format- Linux doesn't support writing to NTFS volumes "out the box", and some distros dont support read-access out the box either!
