Hi there, am upgrading soon and setup so far is

x2 3800
asus a8n sli
2 x 512 corsair

so my dilemma is gfx card

im thinking xfx 7600gt as i know it comes clocked at the highest rate.....but then also i was thinking x800xl cuz it s cheaper and more pipelines ?

bear in mind i do play all the new games, but only in 1024x768 (monitor limitations) though when i get a new monitor it will change to 1280x1024.....

so i pose the question to you clever people

xfx 7600 gt/x1800GTO/x800xl :)

thanks in advance

maximum budget i would say is 170, anymore and then i will have all the "can i push it a bit more to get....."

Supposedly an X1900GT is coming out soon that will be priced around the 7600GT mark but will have more pipelines. I don't know how long that will be though, or if it will be coming out at all, so it might not be worth waiting for.

Supposedly it might also unlock to XT, it's worth thinking about at least.

Addition: Supposedly it will be out this summer, so not long at all. Article is here.

thanks, im not actually gonna be upgrading until say june which hopefully will mean there will be better choice.

Anything else that is worth waiting for ?

Nvidia will probably be working on more cards to fill price gaps the way ATi are working on the X1900GT. Might be worth waiting to find out what they come up with too.

thanks for the advice dudes! looks like i will have to do a bit o' waiting......But in terms of gaming and video editing (i need it for my final year @ uni - hence the dual core) these will be more than good enough coupled with that setup ?

Should be easily. The X1900GT (assuming it will come out) will probably have AVIVO too, which will help you out a lot in regards to video editing and converting. :)

thanks :D

So i take it the x800xl was a no-no ? Or is that slowly becoming obselete, cuz i dont know too much about pipelines and stuff, but i know it has 16 but it now only like £105 inc vat... but then again the memory and gpu comes clocked lower?

Yeah definately...when I was at uni doing my degree, I had a module which required me to render a 45min Maya scene which was pretty demanding at that time, but I could handle it on my P4 2.6 system + 9800XT.
I also used different 3D apps at the same time, so loads were pretty high + my usual mp3's running simultaneously to keep me going :)

Having a dual core system will enhance the process even more...just hold out and wait for a cheap decent graphics card. By the summer you will have lots of choices.

Before I forget, too... If you don't fancy waiting about for a card that might not come out, the X1800XT 256MB is currently daylight robbery at £170 inc. VAT which fits your budget perfectly. Gives top quality gaming performance and also has AVIVO and a bunch of connectors for TV's and whatnot in the box. :) Definitely better than the 7600GT, and for that price it's just insane performance.

So also i just saw the sapphire x1800xt for !70 inc vat - why is it that sapphire cards tend to be cheaper, this was the case with *** x800xl as well, is it because they are not as good as others, clocked lower.....?

And i would hope that my cpu wont bottleneck these cards will it ? and are the games now coming with dual core support ?

The X800XL isnt a HUGE slouch (had one playing oblivion etc for a while in main machine, now playing happily on my "second" box with same card) but as said, a few bits will improve over next couple of months :)

For an extra £40-50 you could get a 7900gt. If you are waiting until june, then they may have dropped a bit more. Otherwise the x1800xt is your best bet.

Thanks to you all guys, dude i noticed you have the a8n sli premium mobo - is this a good one ? cuz i was thinking of just getting the SE version to save me some money? i see you have a similar setup to what im thinking of getting

1 more quite noobish thing to say, the 7800 is this an agp only card or does OcUK simply not sell this version, if so would that be worth a look ?

The 7800 PCIe has been discontinued as it has been replaced by the 7900 series; the agp version was a good way of using upo the spare chips/

p.s. just noticed you id mate, I don't suppose your first name is Kam (or summat similar) with a degree in Chemeng is it?
