Bit of help with my 4670K / Hero OC please?

Hi guys,

My very first system is finally built and working! Hooray! But I seem to be having some problems with my CPU OC and I'm hoping someone can help?

System specs are: Asus Hero mobo, 4670K, H100i, 780 Classified SLI, 1000W Cooler Master V1000, 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X RAM (2133, C11).

Basically I seem to be restricted by my CPU, have a look at this Fire Strike Extreme run:

I'm pleased with my graphics score, but the overall score is pretty average. In the normal Fire Strike I scored around 16000, which I've seen some tweaked single 780 Tis reach. However, my graphics score is quite a bit higher than a Ti with the that overall score, suggesting my issue is the CPU.

Currently it's running at 4.4GHz and from what I can tell it's stable at 1.280v. I've stress-tested it in Prime95 for 3 hours or so, and Aida64 (CPU, FPU, cache, RAM) for about the same. Temp's reach around 68-70 degrees in these situations, much less in something like BF4 and idle at around 18-19 degrees. I'm too scared to leave it running for 24 hours while I'm not home in case a fan fails or something!

However, despite seemingly having some wiggle room as far as temps go, my system absolutely will not play with 4.5GHz. It'll boot and load windows but crash instantly as soon as a game/bench is started. I tried increasing the voltage all the way up to around 1.35v before giving up - just seemed like way too much voltage for a 100MHz gain.

At 4.4GHz I run with XMP enabled, uncore set to Auto and voltage at adaptive. For the 4.5GHz attempts I set the RAM to 1600MHz with stock timings and uncore to stock (34x). This didn't help.

Aside from the parameters above I've not changed anything else - according to the Asus info it's not for noobs like me and just changing the above options should yield a decent OC.

I'm okay with 4.4GHz for everyday use (the PC is on for maybe 2 hours a day) but really wanted to reach say 4.6GHz for bench runs. I had to do a system restore following one crash and am now a bit worried about pushing it further.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking of upgrading to a 4770K and hoping to do better with the silicon lottery but wanted to see if it was me being dumb first! Thanks in advance for any pointers.
 
It doesn't sound like your going to get much more out of it I'm afraid, even if you do it won't make much difference. 4.4ghz isn't to bad tbh, I think its round about average 4.4-4.6
A 4670k will bottleneck 2 x 780's, they are ok with 1 decent card, but for 2 you need an I7, something like the 4770k would do much better, as long as it is a game/benchmark which uses more cores.
 
Thanks buddy. I was wondering about that and think I'll replace the 4670K with a 4770K. Prior to purchasing the components most of the info I found suggested the i7 would only come into its own in encoding and other, non-gaming tasks. But it seems like games are now optimised well for the 4770K, BF4 for example.

Clock for clock, do you think I'd see a difference between the 4670K and 4770K? I'm just wondering if I ended up with another chip that can't exceed 4.4GHz whether there would be a performance difference.

4.4GHz isn't bad really, I was just hoping I could run say 4.6GHz even at fairly high voltage for a couple of bench runs.

I guess I'll keep the 4670K as a spare, not really sure what else to do with it!
 
Have you tried increasing the vRing? When you go north of 4.3 vRing helps stabilise things. 4.5 wasn't stable for me no matter how much I increased vCore. At 1.30 vCore I decided to bump vRing to 1.250 and now I managed to take down vCore to 1.20 and still table. Also set VRIN LLC to extreme to prevent droop which may cause instability.

Hmm no, I haven't tried that. Will read up on it and have a go tomorrow morning. It's late now and I'd only get something wrong if I tried in my current sleep-deprived state!
