hi all,

need a bit of advice on the overclocking front, i had a little play around last night and only got the chip to 2.4

My Spec:

abit - ip35-e
e2180 with tuniq 120 cooler
ocz 6400 ram
500w psu
160 sata drive, ide dvd rom and ide dvd writer
ati radeon x300

I was originally using a 300w psu so i didnt want to try any overclocking:

Old psu voltages:

New Psu voltages:

Do they look ok? When people mention the vcore voltage, what are they putting it up to?

Any advice on getting the chip near 3ghz ? :)

Ta all

People dont put the vcore temp up - they put the vcore voltage up. It depends on your chip and how much your overclocking by but theres a lot of other things to consider too.
Use CPUz and coretemp and you'll need to be changing settings in your BIOS.

Check the basic guide out first.

sorry i meant voltage and i dont like cpuid too much, i used crystal cpuid last night. I'm using speedfan as well to monitor the temps

Well either speedfan or coretemp are telling me porkies

speedfan: core 0 and core 1 18c
coretemp: core 0 33c and core1 32c

Now my room is brass monkeys, what do you all think?

I've just had another go, i cant get the chip to go over 240 fsb.

I've got the cpu core voltage at 1.325 and the cpu vtt voltage = 1.200

What needs to change or have i just got a duff clocking chip?

Go into the BIOS and the SoftMenu Setup, change the External clock to something higher than your stock value (is that what you've been doing?).

yes that's what ive been doing, i changed the external clock to 235*10 with default voltages and it booted ok, put it to 241*10 and it wont boot into xp. I've tried upping the cpu core voltage, but i dont know how high to go

Maybe its softmenu setup?

Either way, read the basic overclocking guide then gain access to the part of your BIOS that allows you to overclock - think it will have the softmenu setup if not Uguru.

Change the FSB (CPU speed) from auto to manual and start increasing the FSB by the amount you require. For 3Ghz you'll want 334x9, and try a voltage of 1.400v. Unlink memory if you can for now.

If that boots, then run Prime95 to see if it is stable, if it runs for 8 hours without failing, you can try lowering your votlages to improve load temps. If it doesn't - and throws a CPU error, you may need more Vcore, or to setup the RAM more specifically (voltages, timings, ratio) if a RAM error.

Thats the raw basics and you should only be changing voltages/BIOS settings if you are confident you know what you are doing.

But I hope that helps.
Apologies if it's a bit unspecific but I work better when I have the actual BIOS/settings to look at. :)

jesus, i thought i'd popped something, I put the fsb upto 300 and the multiplier down to 9, vcore to 1.4 and it wouldnt boot. Long error beeps, wouldnt boot after clearning the cmos either.

I've just had to take the monkey to bits because of the tuniq tower, and remove the cpu

I think i might just stick to 2.3, i assume my chip is duff for overclocking

You haven't said what frequency/ratio you are running your memory at, that could be your problem. If you haven't already, set it to run 1:1 with your processor until you find your cpu's limit and as suggested earlier increase the memory voltage. That chip should go way over a 240 fsb (or indeed 300) so that's not the limit. Also check your pci express frequency is on manual and set to 100, and if that bios has a separate option for regular pci set it to 33.

I hope you have more success, I can't see a 2180 crapping out at 2.3 with a decent cooler, if you're unsure reread the guides on this site, and as dr sarf suggested make sure you use CPU-Z for info on your memory clocks etc. Good luck.

i think it might be the memory holding it back, i'll change the memory tonight to 1:1. The pci frequency was definately 100.

I'm still a bit unsure on the memory side and frequency/ratio part
