Hi all, first thread so go easy. I think i am quite pc savvy but very unsure when comes to overclocking as i dont want to kill anything. Just bought a new system as follows:

Intel E6550 Core 2 Duo,
Corsair 520W Modular PSU,
ASUS P5K Mobo,
Stock HSF
Patriot 2GB PC2-6400 C4 Extreme Memory,
nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB Graphics Card
Themaltake Tsunami Case.

Now i know its not the greatest system ever but i did think i could get near 3ghz with it.Problem is this - i use the AI Suite that comes with mobo. Says i can only have multiplier of either 6 or 7 which is fine, but when i put it onto 7 and upped the FSB by about 2mhz i got instant BSOD and a reboot. AI Suite then said i was running back at a 6x multiplier.
I then upped the multiplier to 7 using the BIOS and a FSB of 370 - which boots up with no problems whatsoever! - HOWEVER - the AI Suite says only running with 6x @ 370FSB?? (Although it sometimes flickers to 7x but i mean flickers!)
Question is - where do i go from here?? System runs fine for me (Not a gamer) but does not feel as fast as my P4 3Ghz that i had previously (obviously @ 2.4!) Should i leave well alone or can i get more out of it. I am only used to o/clocking CPU so memory and North bridge etc is completely new to me!
Its stable and runs Beryl on Linux no probs, but i thought i would ask people who know their stuff! (Guessing Stock HSF will crop up ;) )
Sorry for long post - Just wanted to get as much info as poss in. Cheers :D

Looks like you still have Speedstep on in the bios. Not a problem if your stable with it on but can cause problems as it not only drops the multiplier but it also drops the voltage. Not all systems are stable when overclock to say 370MHZ FSB with a lowered CPU voltage.

ok, i will give that a go when i get home - thanks. Been looking into memory too and seems i may have to alter that too! Just out of curiosity - what figures for o/clock do you reckon i could maybe get from my system?? :)

Spot on peeps - I turned off most things in the BIOS and did a simple 400fsb x 7 and low and behold, cpu-z says running at 2.8ghz with 29 degrees at idle. Well happy with that and i will go for pushing a little harder over the weekend. It is running a lot faster but should i alter the memory settings or leave alone???
