Guys , not sure if anyone else has come across this .

I purchased a car last year and prior to purchasing is from the dealer I did an independent HPI check and all showed up clear.

A year on I’m selling the car and a prospective buyer has sent me another HPI report showing the car as exported in 2016 , he believes it was a VAT fraud ?

So having HPI this car and purchased from a dealer where do I stand , having a Google around everyone says if an export flag shows up don’t buy it ?

This happened with my sisters M4 although she only found out about it after it was traded in (which went without a hitch) a different dealer phoned her a few months later to ask if she knew anything about it,which she didn’t , he mentioned something about VAT fraud also.

I guess having an export flag without a subsequent import flag is the issue? (Regardless as to how the initial flag came about)

Speak with HPI? Perhaps it’s just an error.

Have you done another HPI check to confirm it matches the buyer's ?

This just reminded me when browsing cars recently on Autotrader I noticed an official BMW dealer was selling a cat S car as approved used going by the price I suspect the dealer's check didn't match the one Autotrader does.

In addition To this I’m still scratching my head as surely DVLA would not have issued a new log book if it was exported in 2016 ?

Just used them on line - all clear my the looks of it .

HPI (as in genuine HPI check from HPI, the term is sometimes misused to mean a vehicle check from any provider) offer up to £30k indemnity so you should be OK, although I guess the prospective buyer may be spooked. Find out what provider they used for their check.

Wait, so your prospective buyer has a HPI check saying your car has a export marker on it, but you've just ran one and it's not showing a export marker.

Have they showed you the HPI report to verify it's genuine? I just wonder if they're trying to con you into low-balling the price to get rid of it.

Since you have one and it doesn't show it as exported I think the above is likely feasible, they're trying it on to try and get a price reduction or something!

Oh yeah the classic lump and bump HPI fraud, I hear all dealers are at it.

Honestly, where does OCUK get these conspiracy theories from?

It's hardly a CT is it.

You can't complain at others suggestions without offering one up yourself. So what theories have you got.

The plot thickens , the guy seemed a genuine buyer . He made some initial enquiries with me and then HPI the car , didn’t like what he saw so didn’t even come to see it or make am offer . Ive then had a dealer contact me and raised an HPI report that’s showed he same export marker - again a different HPI company ,

So in the last year it’s had 5 HPI checks ,

1. Me when I bought it - no export marker
2. Prospective purchaser - showed an export marker
3. A dealer messaged me showing me an HPI report with an export marker - AUTO TRADER POWERED BY Experian
3. I’ve rechecked with another HPI company this morning - no export marker
4. I called the dealer I purchased the car from last year and he has re run the HPI report and it shows as clear and also the one he did when he purchased as stock.

I’ve called DVLA and they have confirmed no marker was ever placed on it . Further to this I’ve now called Experian and they are investigating the export marker.

Point in case is I have unequivocally found out. It all HPI reports are the same - very alarming. Wish I could place Ss but I’m not in a position to give away the reg number /
