BitFenix Recon Owners

Phoebetria V1.2.1 (for controlling your BitFenix Recon fan controller) is now available for download.

I've had Phoebetria running for 2 days without issue and thought it was time to release 1.2.1 which addresses a lot of bugs or issues that 1.2.0 had. V1.2.0 was really a fairly ambitious upgrade and bugs got missed -- the majority of them are now fixed.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/phoebetria/

Tested on Windows 7 (Ultimate, 64-bit), Windows XP, OSX, Fedora, Linux Mint (Cinnamon)

Note: On Fedora there are some unresolved issues with the way Gnome 3 displays dialogs; Phoebetria works as expected using KDE 4. A source RPM is also available as well as the Git repository. If there is not a package for your OS and need help compiling, leave a message.

From CHANGES.txt:

This is a bug fix release. Due to the nature of some of the bugs it is
highly recommended that all users upgrade to this version if they are
using version 1.2.0. Stability and usability has been improved. The
internal state of Phoebetria is now reset after the system goes through
a sleep/wake cycle. Occasional 'freezing' of the UI has been addressed.
Software auto has been improved. Phoebetria can once again work
correctly with the OEM software still running.

Known issues: It would be desirable that if Phoebetria is running in SW
Auto mode that when the OS is shut down (not sleep/suspend) it sets the
Recon to (hardware) auto mode. Unfortunately if Phoebetria is minimised
to tray this does not happen. This is being worked on and is likely to
be fixed in V1.3.

Enjoy.

Thanks n3mss.

I posted a week or so back on the Bitfenix forum and you replied to me.

I will test this out as im currently using 1.2 and will report any issues.

Thanks LtMatt and Fire_fly ;)

LtMatt I wondered where you'd gotten to! Good to hear from you. I'm particularly interested in this comment of yours (from the bfx forum)

Once i load a pre set profile the fan speed changes work, but they dont show correctly on the app, instead they incorrectly show all fans running at full soeed

I'm wondering if this issue is fixed in 1.2.1? If not I'll continue hunting down what might be going wrong.

Edit: Have you written the manual yet? LOL :D

Edit 2: Since we're serious folks (me and Chris) the version number in the About dialog has a code name for this release as well.

My mistake i had two copies of the software running at once, i think that was why it wasn't updating correctly. I forgot that it was running in the taskbar and when i clicked the shortcut a second time i had two instances of it running.

LtMatt, you mentioned you'd like to be able to switch profiles by right-clicking the tray icon. There are two ways to do this.

(a) Menu option "Manage Profiles" which would open up the manage profiles dialog where you could open the required profile; or
(b) Menu option "Profiles/profilesListedHereInSubMenu

Which do you think would be better?

Edit: I guess the problem with (b) is that the profile list could be huge.. not sure if it's really an issue though (I have more profiles than most probably -- for testing -- and my list has only about 15 profiles)

Truthfully with software auto you only need one profile... Software auto :)

Great idea though... I like that better than the "quick set" buttons!

B would be better.

I only use three profiles. Idle, Gaming and Benchmark. Quiet, medium, loud etc.

I'd just like to be ablet to change profiles without having to open the main app. :)

To be able to do that with 1 or 2 clicks would be great.

I've been thinking about getting this fan controller.

So LtMatt can you switch profiles on the fan controller it's self? or do you have to use a app on your PC? I haven't really read up on Recon. I just hear it uses fan profiles and that's what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Is there anyway to reduce the variation in fan speeds? Sometimes my sp 120 fans go into the yellow zone and the speed fluctuates. Is there anything i can do to better stabilize the speeds?

I don't think so. You can manually adjust the different channels though.

Its far better and easier to use the APP though.

In the next version (a few weeks at the rate we're going!) I hope so. But, it will be for software auto only... there's nothing I can do about how the hardware auto operates :(

One issue im having.

I have two SP120 high performance corsair fans connected on slots 1 and 2.

For some reason slot 1 only seems to run around 2100 where as slot 2 goes up to 2300.

Is there anyway you could create keyboard shortcuts for profiles ?

Not really sure how this could be made to work. The application window would need focus to capture the key events which would kind of defeat the purpose of what I think you're asking... (well not defeat it entirely but make it less valuable)

Yes, this is a common thing. It seems when the Recon does its "calibration" (when all fans run on 12V for 20-30 seconds) sometimes the max RPM isn't really what would be expected. In my case I have 4 fans all of the same brand with two that have a different max RPM (most of the time -- sometimes they will all have the "correct" max).

Chris has a hypothesis that this is due to static pressure affecting the fan speeds when they're running at 12V during that calibration period (that the Recon does in hardware). For example, the two fans of mine that almost always have different max RPMs are in a push/pull configuration with a radiator between them. The hypothesis is that the fans are influencing each other and therefore affecting the RPMs they can achieve at 12V (during a 30 second period anyway).

In the current version of Phoebetria you can click on the Channel Number icon and click the "Use Max RPM" if you want to manually use the max RPM possible. What this actually does is sets the manual RPM to be 65500RPM and the Recon tries to achieve that (i.e. sets the PWM "voltage" to maximum ~~ 12V)

Hehehe BrianB. Wait for the next release (this weekend, next weekend at the very latest). It has

Channel names
Probe names
"Probe affinity" (for SW Auto, can link a fan to any probe)
Better software auto
User preferences (start minimised, startup profile, shutdown profile, scale, minimise to task bar or tool tray, and more)
Themes (!!!!!)

And probably other things I can't remember right now :)

Edit: I've been speaking to Chris (digitalm3) and this upcoming release is, really, what we had always hoped Phoebetria would be way back when we started the project.

This could be the release to end all releases. Can't wait. Thanks again for this great little prog. Bitfenix should ditch their crap and employ you tbh.
