I have a Fractal R4 case, and am in need of a 3 or 4 channel fan controller that has a flat face (so, touchscreen), and the ability to turn off individual fans completely. It needs to be for a single 5.25" bay, and preferably cheap. I don't care what it looks like, and I have no need for automatic fan control, software, or any other features than the ones I mentioned.

So far, the best choice I've found is a Bitfenix Recon. I don't particularly want to use the temp sensors or the software (or the USB header that it requires for the software), but otherwise it seems perfect for the job.

I've been put off by a few personal reviews though. I've read someone saying that the manual fan control doesn't work properly without attaching the temp sensors. This doesn't make sense to me, but I've read two personal reviews stating this: can someone shed some light on this?

Also, can someone please confirm that this controller takes fans down to 0rpm (or 0 current/voltage)?

I've never tried without the temp sensors but I have 3 out of the 5 bundled at the rear of the Recon anyway. Just tried it and the fan ramps to max with the temp probe removed.

You can turn the fans totally off. I would think Recon cuts power to the fan totally as with my fans it drops from 400-500 down to 0 in one step.

Thanks for checking this stuff for me. :)

Do you mind clarifying something for me? By removed, do you mean when the probe and the cable has been removed from the Recon, or do you mean when the probe has simply not been attached to anything? If you mean the first, then I guess this means that I could simply bundle the probes and cables inside the drive bay like you've done, without attaching the ends to anything, and still have fine speed control of the fans? I wouldn't really mind that, though it's a bit clumsy I suppose :p

Yes you can just bundle them up. Unplugging the temp probe will result in 100% fan speed.

A workaround would involve some 10k resistors attached to the pins on the recon. This would be quite neat.
