Can anyone recommend me a GooD router.
I have a linksys WRT54GS (as my mate had one - No problems including games)

I have extreme lag on server connection with Steam so i get about 200 servers with a high ping on CS TF2 etc (fine once i join - but limits selection)

command and conquer (any, inc RA3) connects for about 30seconds then dies online!

I have tried everything... port forwarding, triggering.
NOTHING WORKS! after 2 years am fed up. :(

I just want to split the connection and make it wireless for the family laptop.

Please help?

router Defo going on the santa list.

to add further detail it is the version 6 router i have with v1.50.9 firmware.

It appears that the older versions 1.1 to 4.0 had diffrent harware (effectivly difrent router) and my friend had a 2.0. so these must have been more suited to what i want :(

thanks

People don't seem to like them but my old Belkin thing works a treat with gaming etc.

Agree with the Linksys being poo - mine regularly craps out even basic interent, let alone games etc!

yep its defo going on the market.
i will look into the linksys and possably the Belkin as the wirless aint as important to me.

thanks for info.

Even if you disable the wireless, the GL's probably going to be a better option, given the third party firmware you can stick on it.

Not sure about the the C&C thing, but the CS problem is a common one going back a LONG time. Basically your routers NAT table fills with all the connections trying to gather the info from all the servers and slows everything down. Some routers were worse than others, a few used to lock up solid!

I like dlink routers, wouldn't touch any linksys routers had a few and all have been pants even with custom firmware etc.

Seriously the 54GL and Tomato is probably the best combination since steak and ale! It works amazingly well, even better than my much more expensive Draytek solutions.

Maybe ive just been unlucky but I always had issues with linksys routers, all the added functionality is great but in my experience they have been very unreliable hanging and having to be rebooted a lot and it wasnt just with 1 router, ive had a few and have used them in my old workplace were they would randomly die and have to be rebooted. Wouldnt touch them again but thats just my experience with them.

I take it your on cable and have tried connecting the cable modem directly to your machine via ethernet?

If so and it still lags then its your ISP, most likely oversubscription in your area. If it works fine then as above, invest in a WRT54GL, you wont be disappointed :)

Servers work fine(although am now in uni halls they are limited) and CnC doesnt disconnect without the router.
i would proberly like to avoid a linksys but a lot are saying stick with them i just dont want to spend £30 -40 and have same problem :(

with being in uni now tho the clone MAC address on my linksys is great help so i can make a network( as uni try to stop u adding hardware to there network)

will take further look into a WRT54GL and a dlink.

thanks for the help, any other advice keep it coming.

Linksys have always been very good. The recent additions to the WRT54GS series have been sub standard but open firmware means lots of the issues can be fixed.
The WRT54GL is probably the best SOHO router out there at the minute and it runs on Linux so it's pretty much bulletproof and infinitely flexible. Short of buying it's cisco bigger brothers it's my top recommendation.
