last night i was using my backup hard drive (which i had to connect via internal sata) with bitlocker enabled and in the middle of encrypting. during this the sata cable was pulled out (child, you turn your back for one second...). ever since, each time i type in the password to gain access it will freeze that partition of the hard drive though it will not if i type in an incorrect password, the other partition (none encrypted) works as normal before typing in the password and very slowly after.

any advice that does not involve formatting would be greatly appreciated.

I would be surprised if you have any option other than to format to be honest.

When an operation as 'harsh' as a full drive encryption is interrupted, it's very rare to be able to reverse it.

If course you had fully backed up anything on the drive before trying to encrypt it, didn't you ;).

Half way through encryption and then the drive removed I would say it was a format job - unless you built some recovery disks or such like then I can think of no easy way back - as it had started, chances are, it would have encrypted vital parts of the hard drive and you won't be able to see the disk correctly from your other operating system.

you can try waiting when it freezes (give it 2/3 hrs) after that if it still doesnt respond, format it. Its better to wait and have a slight chance of recovery than none at all

ended up doing a quick format. thanks for your replies everyone

do you know of any good recovery software? figured i may as well ask here instead of taking up more space on the page!
