Bittorrent makes computer freeze

I've been having a fair few problems with random freezing and had no idea what was causing it. However ive figured that whenever i run my bittorrent client and download something it seems to happen. I've tried multiple clients and had the same problem with each (utorrent, vuze etc.)

I've read somewhere that it can be caused by the number of connections and that lowering this can solve the problem. I've tried that and still have problems althought i might try lowering them even further and see if it helps.

Any know anything about this issue or got any idea how to sort it out??

If it is down to BT then that's about all it could be, since apart from typically opening a high number of connections, it's just standard network traffic.

Had the same with uTorrent, as soon as it started up nothing else would connect for ages. Now switched to Vize (Azureus) and everything is back to normal now. Oh and also with BT.

Define 'freezing' - your whole computer fails to respond? Or your internet connection becomes unresponsive. You have received differing advice because your description is vague.

thank for all the replies. I wasn't expecting much of a response so didnt explain the problem in too much detail.

First off, what i mean by freezing is my whole computer stops responding. Not mouse movement, no response from the keyboard even ctrl alt delete, hdd activity light stops and i have to restart to get things to work again. No error messages when the pc freezes or after the restart.

I use newsgroups too, probably quite a bit more than torrent actually but id like to be able to use both.

Ill try what people have suggested with a few test downloads and see if anything changes.

Thanks again, :)

That will be more than a problem with your router then, needless to say :) If your router is overwhelmed then your internet will stop working but otherwise your PC will work fine.

yeah, im pretty sure its not the router as i could use torrents fine with my last machine, however this one seems to play up. At the moment im thinking it could be my network card. I have a fairly cheap generic pci network card so it could be the root of my problems. Ill try it with a usb adapter or wired connection when i get the chance.

right, ive dropped my number of connections to 30 from like 200 and limited my upload speed to 50 kb/s and after just a minute or two of downloading at like 5-10kb/s my whole system locks up like usual.

Get updated drivers for your networking device, as your existing ones are clearly flakey/buggy. You can limit those connections all you want, but DHT used in bittorrent clients these days will create a large number of UDP connections regardless of that setting.

I'm assuming you're using XP? Pretty sure it's not possible for a network device driver to take down Vista (due to the networking stack being moved out of the kernel).

i think .. Utorrent .. it's best program for torrents file it's just 156 KB for the whole program

try it ..

I have, its my favourite client but i still have the same problem.

And no, im on vista ultimate x64 :p.

I remember when i installed this network card, the drivers on the disk didnt seem to work, then when i had it connected to the internet via wired connection using laptop as a bridge vista found some on the interwebs that worked. They are for a "Ralink" card, and even though mine is "pluscom" they still worked. I've tried to update the drivers by going into device manager --> update driver and it says they are up to date so these current drivers are the only ones i have that seem to work so far.
