i am very unhappy with Bittorret Sync. been using the old free version for a while and now that it upgraded I've lost lots of files as it wont sync more then 10 folders :(

If you're not happy with it I'd suggest getting rid and replacing it with owncloud. Takes a bit more to configure, especially if you go for the Linux version and aren't familiar with Linux, but it works flawlessly.

Is owncloud easy to setup for external access outside of your LAN?

I would have thought you just need to set up ddns and port forwarding. I've only got mine set up on LAN atm.

The one thing I will say about owncloud is there seems to be a ~500MB limit per file :(

edit:
found this after quick google to up the file size limit.
https://doc.owncloud.org/server/7.0/admin_manual/configuration/big_file_upload_configuration.html

hmm, well changing this file in anyway breaks owncloud on my synology :(

As above- use dynamic dns (dnsexit.com have a nifty client), and port forwarding on 443 is enough.

I've not had a problem with files above 500mb either, though I'm not using a synology.

Many thanks for the info guys, i actually have a static ip from plusnet which only cost me £5 :) I guess that rules out the need for ddns. Sounds fairly straight forward then to port forward port 443.
