Hi

Got a bit of a strange occurrence going on and was wondering if anyone could shed any light.

I've got two router/modems, the Voyager 205 I got with the package, and a D-link wireless set-up I got for roaming with my laptop.

I was using the D-link, but it kept being unreliable and I’d lent my Mrs the laptop so I went back to using the 205. I kept noticing on start-up that there was network activity on the Local Area Connection, packets of data being sent and received for no apparent reason. I thought it was just the computer talking to the router or something as the Internet Connection monitor (only shows up with the 205 and not the D-link) wasn’t flashing at the same time, but if I unplugged the phone line, it stopped.

I went back to the D-link to try and stop this, which it did, but then it started playing up again so I went back to the 205 again, and again, the unexplained activity began again.

I did notice recently that after a while, the monitor that pops open to show the Internet Connection closes itself and then straight away, the Local Area Connection stops sending and receiving data?

Weirder still was I restarted tonight, and while the unexplained packet sending/receiving was being done as per usual by the Local Area Connection, I went into Network Connections and switched off the "Show icon in notification area when connected" for the Internet Connection and as soon as I did that, the traffic on the Local Area Connection stopped!

Is my machine possessed?

My first thought is that your 205 might be sending broadcast packets out for some reason, hunting for something probably, not sure what though (NTP server?). Ideally to track down what is happening we'd need a packet sniff done, using something like Ethereal, to find out what the packets are.
