Hey guys, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I couldn't think of anywhere better to put it but if you think it should be elsewhere, feel free to move it.

Does anyone know what Audio "enhancement" profile/EQ profile Youtube apply to audio of their videos? I'm not sure of the best way to explain what I mean, but you can hear the difference very clearly between an Audio file on your computer and the same Audio in a youtube video.
A good way to hear would be to download a youtube video and extract the audio track from it, playing it back standalone.
I find that tracks on youtube have greater clarity and definition as well as slightly higher amplitude bass, and an overall "warmer" tone too.

Obviously youtube isn't exactly the highest quality audio source, but it does make me feel a little upset when a youtube video sounds, comparatively, more enjoyable than the same track being played directly from the CD or from a FLAC rip.

So yeah, anyone know what's up?

I can only speak for myself, but I think Youtube does awful things to the audio. I much prefer the sound of the originals. But if you like it then c'est la vie.

What you're hearing on YouTube is a lot of compression. It's squashing the dynamic range of the original signal so there's less of a volume change between the average and the peak signal. The result is less faithful to the original, but it's making it easier for you to hear the quieter bits of the recording and it stops the peaks from overloading your speakers or headphones.

If you're interested then here's a YouTube video explaining compression.

Try Googling for some audio tools to play around with compression.
