Don't know what got me thinking about this, but I was curious as to power of an average person in BHP, obviously its less than 1, but I just wondered if anyone had figured it out?

I was then thinking of what the power to weight ratio...i.e BHP/Tonne

Must be "The Monday's" kicking in late...

"Put into perspective, a healthy human can produce about 1.2 hp briefly (see Orders of magnitude (power)) and sustain about 0.1 hp indefinitely, and trained athletes can manage up to about 2.5 hp briefly and 0.3 hp for a period of several hours."

Also says a horse can peak at 14.9 hp but sustains less than 1 hp for longer periods

In general, it was found that a healthy human can produce about 1.2 hp briefly and sustain about 0.1 hp indefinitely. 'Brake' in the term 'brake horsepower', refers to a device which was used to load an engine and hold it at a desired round per minute (rpm).

As per the conventions, 1 bhp equals to:
745.5 watts
1.01389 ps
33,000 ft lbf/min
42.2 BTU/min

On an unrelated note :

Hp for Horse, hp for hamster.
Assume hamster can pull 2oz at 1 ft per second.
1Hp =550ft-lb/s
1hp =0.125ft-lb/s
1Hp=4400hp

Well if you only drink water you're suitable for a lower bracket. Shots and alco-pops will also mean higher walking insurance...gone slightly off my own topic here.

4400 * 0.1 = 440.

I have 440 brake hamster power? Cool.

Edit: Actually that can't be right. If a horse has 4400 hamster power and I can produce 1.2 horse power at peak for a short time then I can produce 1.2 * 4400 hamster power, meaning I can produce at peak, 5280 brake hamster power. Cool.

read the rest of that post.. a human can sustain 0.1Hp. A Horse has 4400hp (hamster). Do that math, which I already did, and voila.

On that note, what's the difference between Horse Power and Brake Horse Power?

In terms of cars, I've always thought of HP as the power of the engine alone, and BHP as the power of the car overall, or is it the other way around?

Edit: Wikipedia seems to say it's the other way around.
