is it better to shoot in colour then convert to black and white, as i have done a few in black and white which look amazing on the computer but when i come to printing it looks a little dark. My monitor's brightness is set low anyway and on my Nikon d3100 the screen brightness is set to 0, so i hoped to get a mre acurate picture.

Any thoughts.

Calibrate your monitor first!

Also, when shooting in RAW it will always be in colour as that's a "raw" capture from the sensor.

I would recommend using a dedicated B&W plug-in for lightroom/photoshop/aperture over the standard conversions for B&W for maximum control and beest results with conversion to B&W.
