Black Bean Soup

I was looking at making this:

However, I've only got packaged black beans, rather than canned ones. How long should I soak and boil them for, before starting to follow the recipe?

Bit late of a response but what do you mean by "packaged black beans" exactly?

Dry, in a plastic pack, rather than in water in cans.

Soaked overnight, so about 12 hrs, rinsed and simmered for about an hour I think.

They should be boiled for 5-10 mins before reducing to a simmer. My gran told me this was to remove 'poisons' but that could be an old wives tale.

I read up on it a bit and some dried beans (kidney, etc) need boiling to break down toxins in them before consumption.
