Black box on boot of BMW? cop or something else?

ok so spotted some device on the boot of a car and wondering if anyone could help my curiosity :)

basically it was a small black box about the size of dvd case and twice as thick, was mounted on the top of the boot (saloon car) or the right (driver side) and pointing about 35-40 degrees off from straight back towards the drivers side. the box had a cable going from it into the boot and along the front surface had a rectangular section of different material which looked like what is used on IR sensors...you know...that glossy black plastic.

so yea... thoughts? my initial thought was a speed sensor and that it was and undercover cop car, but from my observation the driver didn't look to be in uniform, nor could I see any of the other usual signs, stuff on dash/windscreen, extra lights on front/back/in grille of the car.

my other thought is that it's a business driver and he has one of this IR detectors/jammers....

***bit of back story***
driving down dual carriageway and people doing 45 in the over taking lane, they eventually pull over. I pull on ahead to look for a gap in the left lane for the lane i need at the round about further down the road. pass this blue BMW with the box on the back, look at my speedo and brick it a bit. was doing about 65 in a 50 :( mostly just slow continuous acceleration after the cars pulled in. so ease off the accelerator but still overtaking... pass him and look in mirrors, can't see uniform or other normal "undercover" things. unfortunately lots of traffic in left lane from here to junction ( and no one let me in :( ) so can't take first exit on round about so decide to go all the way around. the bmw was in the left lane to go left or towards motorway but half way round the round about keeps going round a bit behind me. I keep going round and come off at my exit with him now directly behind me. turn right off main road onto side road towards this golf club and stables (where i'm actually going) and he indicates too...

really bricking it now xD oncomming car also indicating and flashes me to go so now he's between me and the bmw going up the road, i turn off to the stables and look in my mirror and see the bmw pulling over at the base of the road... either stopping there or he continued on to golf club. walked down 5 mins later on the stroll and can't see him.

so not sure if cop following me or just me being paranoid of a golfer :p

tl : dr - dvd sized box on top of boot of BMW, what is it? I was going a bit fast, said car seemed to follow me for a short distance and take my turns then left me alone.

Could have been a cop, but if they wanted to speak to you they would have done so at the time. You've almost certainly got nothing to worry about.

I worry about things :p it's what I do xD paranoia has gone now... just more curious. was a bit worried at the time because of me going all the way around and then take two turn off into smaller/more secluded areas to my destination that if it was a cop he may think I was trying to lose him xD hahaha

yea that's what I was thinking, I've been pulled by the police before so as you said, if he wanted to chat he would have flashed/ indicated for me to pull over. ay, not worried, just want a bit of closure about what that black box is :D

yep, the black ones with the yellow trim yea? see those and red ones (welsh air ambulance) flying about quite a bit. used to work in a hospital so would see them landing there and also was in the gliding squadron at the local airfield where the ambulance heli is kept and police would come to refuel :) got to see lots of helis/air craft up there :D
 
GPS tracker? Used to have one when I was field based working - roughly matches that description, although a bit unusual to have it on the outside of the car I would have thought.

yea bit odd to have GPS on the outside :p

quite possible, looked a bit thin to be a camera for taking pics though, did look more like a sensor as, like i said, there was just the glossy black strip of plastic on one face (pointing to behind traffic) that showed any difference on the box. but I dunno, hence the thread :D

if it was ANPR think he just followed me to see if i was going to drive like a tool? but then saw I was at my destination so just went on his merry way? :p

He was probably just going the same way as you were..

if that's true then he was a bit silly to move from the correct lane 20 yards before the turn off to then have to go all the way around the roundabout like I did xD entirely possible tho :p
