Black Damp

It's probably mold, a bucket of hot water mixed with bleach should clean the mold from the surface. There will probably be a bigger problem related to humidity that is causing the growth, might be coming from the wall or ceiling, you will probably need to investigate.

inadequate airflow will be the cause most likely.

if your windows have the extra vent part leave it open and let some fresh air get into the room.

clean with a mixture of bleach and water as above

Shout at it till it goes away

Since it's black, racist remarks will be extra effective.

Remove the mold, disinfect using bleach or Dettol or something of the sort, then get rid of the moisture. Try to avoid covering up the smell rather than tackling the source.

Ive seen on a DIY website you can buy mold paint, is this any good ?

just mix bleach and water

mould paint is a waste of money imo unless you can get it as cheap as normal paint and it actually works.

mould will just eat through regular paint if you dont properly kill the mould with bleach or a mould spray

To stop it coming back you need to try to keep the moisture in the room to a minimum. Either get a dehumidifier and turn it on every couple of days, crack open a window every once in a while, or (as someone has already said) open the vents in your windows (if you have them).

Good luck... I've had mould in a couple of places I've lived, horrible stuff :(

The stain block paints do work wonders. We had a leak in the seal behind our bath and the ceiling below had mould and water marks all over it, that just kept coming back after it was painted. I also cleaned it with bleach and bought some expensive mould killing stuff but the stains would always creep through the paint.

I painted over it with stain blocker paint and it has been fine for well over a year now. Great stuff!

I bought a dehumidifier to sort this problem out.

You will be amazed the amount of moisture they drag out of the air in a couple of hours.
We set ours to run for 3 hours every morning at the moment and the mould problem is solved.
