On the right side of my screen there's this rather strange dark mark or smudge (it's not dirt or finger prints!) It's about the size of a £2 coin. It doesn't show up on a black background or a white one, but other dark colours it's quite obvious.

The steam background here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/index.php is a very obvious one.

Why would this be? And how can I get rid of it? If I rub the screen with a cloth is doesn't go. They don't look like dead pixels or anything, just slightly darker. I could try and take a picture with a camera I guess.

I've also noticed (on the same steam colour background) some of my desktop icons shine through, like how old CRT's would if left on the same screen. I thought this wouldn't happen in TFT's? And it's not like I leave it on all day, and a the screensaver comes on after 20 minutes!

The desktop icons dont shine through... it's screen burn. Pretty much any display tech suffers from it, plasma screens more than others. Although i've noticed my 2405's are a lot more prone to it than my other LCD's. It should go after a few hours if the monitor is turned off or has a moving image displayed.

The dark patch seems like a back lighting issue, or a slight defect with the pixels in that area, or if a lot of pressure was applied to the area it could have done that (maybe when being delivered) if it's any of them then theres nothing you can do about it.

Sounds like its er, bodged, can you tell if its physically on the screen surface or not? can you get a pic from a phone or digicam so we can see?

PS MR.B You cant get screen burn on LCD monitors (nothing to burn out). You can get "image persistence" this is simply when the crystals dont switch and stay as they where its only temporary, just switch the monitor off for a while it should fix the problem.
