After installing a graphics card then reverting to the original inbuilt Mother board one, my pc would start but only show the desktop background and I could access nothing, after trying to fix this I now only see a black screen after the normal start up process!

Need help! Would be appreciated, I'm very desperate

Did you remove the GPU's drivers when you went back to the onboard? You could try booting from your Windows CD and doing a repair install- might well re-detect the hardware and sort out any driver clashes...

You say 'after the normal startup process'... If you get display right up til windows starts, you may be able to get into safe mode (which uses 640x480 bog-standard VGA drivers) by pressing F5 (if memory serves) during the boot.
Once in, go into display settings and check the correct display device is selected.

F8 will give you a boot menu for safe mode when starting up, pretty sure there's other shortcuts too but I'm old and F8 never fails. Just tap the key every second or so BEFORE it would initially start loading windows (i.e. before the windows load screen would normally show).

Go into safe mode, remove any graphics card drivers, reboot - if it is a driver issue the PC should look for a driver for the on-board GPU.
