Black screen and PC unresponsive - PSU?

My PC has been performing oddly over the last few days. I was getting the odd BSOD or failures on Superfetch etc. But now if I put the system under load (Prime95) the screen goes into standby and PC becomes unresponsive. I cannot even reset the system with the reset button so have to totally remove power.

The system is not overclocked and is running mianly on auto (P5K pro, Q9550, etc).

Could this be the PSU? Are there any checks I could do on the PSU or anything else I could check.

Any help appreciated :)

could possibly be try unplugging the dvd drive and running it:D might put less strain on ya psu btw whats ur spec?

Samsung DVD writer (SATA), Q9550, Asus p5K pro, 4gb OCZ reaper, Xi-fi, Intel pro 1000 NIC, Zalman 9500 AT, Nvidia 8800 GTS 512, 3 HDD's, Antec 300, Hiper 580 - no overclocks.

The psu is probably a couple of years old now, maybe more.

have you tried dropping out a stick of memory, removing nic, disconnect hd's and dvd drive from power (just leaving the boot disk connected) ?

Not yet but thanks for the suggestion. I will look at this later (at work at the moment).

This will effectively reduce the load but could also point to a peice of hardware.

I had this problem. The monitor in the end wouldnt even recognise the PC. Fought it was the graphics cards turned out to be the motherboard was faulty!

I have now switched off Q-Fan for the 2 x Zalman 120mm case fan control.

I now cannot get it to crash after running Prime95 and Intel Burn In Test several times each.

Is this a known issue?

Ran Prime95 this morning and it restarted the PC so looks like I am back to sqaure one.
So while previous post might hint to temperature problem second is against that... Unless it's PSU.

Hiper 580...
Bling bling ping pong...
Only thing missing is cheap Chinese toy plastic construction.

LOL :) After reading about some horror stories around this PSU I can quite believe its this!

I am running through some tests with bits from my wife's computer - testing memory at the moment so will see about the PSU next.

"Bling bling ping pong" - installed new Cosair TX 650w. New PSU didn't change a damn thing.

Last think to check is the CPU which I suspect will be fine. Then RMA time on the motherboard.
