Hi guys,

Ive been having an issue with my GTX 970 pretty much since I bought it 2 years ago. Whenever I play company of heroes 2 it will usually get so far and then crash to a black screen saying no signal detected. Ive got MSI afterburner on and ive upped the cooling on the card as well as the cooling for my entire PC and its made no difference. Any other game is fine, I can play for as long as I want and no issues. I recently had the same issue with Total War: Warhammer but that seems to have stopped. Company of heroes 2 however is typically always doing it, ive had a few months where its stopped but then it eventually comes back.

What is strange however is that when it goes to a black screen I can hear other programs going on in the back, I crashed just now and had two friends on razer comms and I could still talk to them after the crash, I could hear the sound of the game until it started to break down and then stopped about a minute from the crash. At this point my MSI was saying the card was at 0c and had a usage percent of 4928495%. Windows in the meantime was making noises as if something was disconnecting followed by a program error sound which I presume was COH2.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is video memory as I've seen what you describe (Afterburner crazy readings and black screens) when memory overclocking hit its limit. Or maybe the core.

The graphics driver is crashing so it could also be software related, or hardware drive related.

Which card and drive is it?

any overclock on the card? mad max does this to me if I run the game while my card is overclocked. if I drop to standard clocks its fine. all other games have been fine.

Ive not tried it since changing to the asus 970 I might try it tonight.

Not sure if I have fixed it or not but I changed the PCI slot my GPU was in to a lower slot. Unfortunately it means things like MSI afterburner aren't picking up that I have a GPU (probably needs fiddling) but otherwise my PC seems to be working fine now. Ive had a couple of games on COH2 without any issues and Fallout 4 recently started doing the crash which has seemingly stopped also.

Could a broken/faulty PCI-E socket have caused this issue? Or is just coincidence?
