Hey, built my mates new build today

Corsair tx750 PSU

3.33ghz dual core
p5k mobo
4gb OCZ mem
Gainward 280 1gb gfx card

all running at stock settings, no OC, vista boots up, we try something gfx card related and it seems to go black screen and die

Is this a gfx card driver issue? its not overheating, neither is the cpu, all power cables are connected so that isnt the issue either.

tried to uninstall the drivers, crashed during, then upon restart ti showed as having uninstalled the drviers fine, tryed to install new uns, crashed mid way....

anyone got any tips?

chucked his old x1800xt in and pc is running perfect so its the gainward 280, must be why it was on deal of the week :P

as soon as a 3d app would begin the screen will go black and the pc would crash? both pci-e connectors are in, and during 2d it seems fine, any tips?

fims can be played, as soon as a 3d app is launched it dies, i.e eve online splash screen where you log on, dies launching that (its not full screen)

A long shot, but perhaps it's PSU trouble? If possible install the card in a different PC to rule it out.

could be but i hope it isnt, i will have to remove my HD cage to fit this bloody thing in to try it in mine, grrr. Will try it tho, think its borked tbh

just went to chuck it in my pc, but the olde ocz 520 doesnt have 2 pci connectors and i dont have any adapters.

so cant test in my machine, bloody thing

Two other thoughts....are you using the 64-bit version of Vista? There are various reports that this could be a driver issue with this version of Vista - could you try and install with 32-bit Vista instead? Other people have reported success by replacing the 8 pin PCI-E connector with a 2 x 6 pin -> 8pin adapter

just had some progress, when i put it back in i tryed the other 2 pci-e connectors and it wouldnt power up, red light came on the gfx card.

so i decided to take just one out and stuck one of the originals in, it now seems work properly....

quite confusing, my thoughts were perhaps this PSU has a few 12v rails, and when using both connectors from 1 rail it would die, but now mixing it, it seems fine? long shot but i cnat think of anything else, unless some of these connectors are dead heh

hmmm the psu doesnt have muiltple rails (dont think), so god knows what was wrong with it!

oh well, just vista to fight with now, POS OS :)

new problem, last night mate was having problems where he would download something with vista and it wouldnt download, it would complete but not actually put it where it was supposed to go.
Also could not get the ATI CCC drivers to uninstall correctly using any of the removal tools (we tested his old x1800xt) so just suggested we do a fresh reinstall of 64bit vista.

During POST the SMART now lets me know the HD status is bad and during installation, vista said "disk may fail soon".

I stuck his HD in my computer and reformatted it the slow way, all 1TB of it....

in the mean time i threw in his old samsung 250gb drive which is working fine, and it installed it on, during the reboot after it completed installation it would refuse to boot vista and go back through the install phase and start again.......

hmmmmm, HD is borked it seems, but something is also stopping vista installing correctly, it also seems to take a really long time to install if thats normal or not i dont know
