Black screen on boot

hi all

right, My dad came in this morning, saying his computer wont boot anymore. I walk in, push the power button and nothing happens. Luckily i have an old 220w something PSU lieing around so i stick that in and it begins the boot sequence. But, still just a black screen. there is a signal but a black screen. I figurered the old 5200 had popped its clogs so I stuck my old 6800NU in. And once again, the screen was black. I thought the old 220 something PSU wouldn't be able to run the 6800NU, but it kinda works, just still the same black screen the 5200 gave me.

So, i stuck the 5200 back in, took the pc to mine, stuck the 12v leads from my hiper type R 580W into his mobo, using my tft, same black screen.

What would be the culprit for this? The motherboard im guesing.

Im not 100% on his specs
300w+ PSU
512mb DDR
3200+ sempron
Asus Mobo
couple of HD's
Nvidia 5200NU

nothing spectacular or amazing, he only uses it for office/web

any help would be great.

Does it make any beeps when you turn it on? It could be motherboard or CPU, or even memory. Have you tried swapping the RAM modules over with some that you know work for testing? Also another idea would be to clear the CMOS in case its just got itself confused.

If it doesnt beep its CPU or motherboard, if it beeps its motherboard or RAM most likely

cleared cmos, made no difference.

He came in saying 'it isn't working, wont boot, i've had it apart but have no idea' So he's probably naffed something up. got i hate this, I always end up picking up the pieces.

I'll start by replacing ram, cpu, Hd's... good job i have to 939's here... *yawn
