My sons computer has developed a weird problem.Whe the computer is first turned on, the screen stays black.I can hear windows starting, but the screen does not come on and the 'on' button just flashes like on standby.
Rebooting the computer (and then choosing 'start windows normally') and the screen comes on and it all works as normal!
I have updated the bios, but it made no difference.
System specs:
The system is the same as my sig apart from a i3 2120 CPU and 6850 GFX card and it has worked perfectly since it was built a year ago.
Does it sound like a card issue?

It was on FB, I updated to FD which is the latest (apart from the beta UEFI) rev 2 board.

It started with FB bios, thats why I updated, but it made no difference.
I will try an uninstall of the gpu drivers in safe mode and see if that makes any difference.

You've not got a seagate external hard drive plugged in have you, my machine does the same when the hard drive is connected and faultless when it's not.

OK still got the problem. So far I have tried the following suggestions:
updated bios
enabled XMP in bios
Installed latest GFX drivers
When the computer is 'warm' I can turn it off and it will restart with no problems. If I leave it a couple of hours, when I turn it on the monitor standby light just flashes, and sometimes a small 'digital/analog' box will flash in the top R/H corner of the monitor then disappear, the screen stays black, and you can hear windows starting through the speakers. Reboot the computer and it starts normally. The computer is connectd to the monitor dvi-d to dvi-d.

I have the same issue with my laptop after installing the latest graphics driver for my GT 630M so if I rolled back I assume it would work as intended.

On a side note I'm running windows 8.1 so not all drivers work as intended.

OK an update to this weird problem:

On Friday I turned the comp on, and spammed the F8 key to get into safe mode. The screen stayed black though, with the monitor standby key flashing.
Turned the system off and on again, but this time it started in safe mode, and I got this message:
"Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
Let the computer do its thing, rebooted, and since then everything seems fine, its starting up normally on the first press of the 'on button'
I can only assume a windows update messed up somewhere and caused the issue!

OK problem is back, sometimes I have to turn the comp on and off 2 or 3 times for the monitor to come off standby.I can hear windows starting up fine, just can't see it on the screen. On start up the monitor has a small box that flickers between 'digital/analog' Once its on, its fine all day, and if I turn it off, and start it again within a few minutes it works perfectly.
I am starting to suspect either the GFX card or the monitor is at fault. :(

DVI-D to DVI-D. a 'check input signal' message flashed up for a second today, so I am really starting to suspect the monitor. Its a samsung 226 so its getting on a bit.
