I keep getting this random problem while playing GTR2. it can happen anytime sometimes not for ages, I thought it was the 10.7s so I changed to 10.3s it is still doing I increased fan to 50% still does it every now and then.
The frustrating thing is it is happening mid race on race night.
We have a very compeditive league so when you get in a good postion you have earnt it, now this is the third week in a row it has happened to me.
going to put the 10.8s in now.
 
Hmm, that sounds to me like it could be an instability issue with either your GFX card or your CPU.

Have you overclocked either of them?
 
GPU not overclocked, cant see it being CPU even though its overclocked, it is under water and doesn't get hot and pass's tests.
But I will run another test on cpu just to be sure.
 
I had the old grey bars issue on my first 5870 it was DOA the card is faulty or damaged in some way, start the RMA process if you still have warranty
 
my bet it is not under warranty anymore, its weird as it doesn't do it straight away. sometimes takes a couple of hours for it to happen.
 
I have just put furmark on the machine and I am running the stability test with MSAA, been going 20mins with temps hovering around 82 with fan set to auto.
Will leave it for a few hours.
Surely if that is fine it cant be the card, I cant see it myself as I have only ever overclocked it for benchs and thats when I first got it and its not as if I hammer the card as I dont use that machine much and the main game I play is GTR2.
 
My 4870X2 did the same and would also pass Furmark with no issues. A month or so later I started to get intermittent artifacting and sent the card off under RMA.

The card was found to be faulty.
 
Think its a driver issue, there was a AMD forum thread about it ages ago where ppl were complaining about the black screen and grey bars running across the screen every so often. But it was more to do with the 5 series cards and not the 4 series...
 
Gone back now 28 days without my main game machine, wonder what I will get back another 4870x2 or something different.
 
Hate to say this, but its not the card, I have put a 3870x2 in the machine only for the black screen to re-appear again, new set of drivers 10.8s, if not must be something with the game.
 
Im having the exact same issue with mine normally after about 1hours play of a game. Its a XFX 6750 1GB that ive had since about 3months, i still have the receipt and all the packaging.
What should i do? whats happens in a RMA do you get your money back or a new card?
Id say it happens about every 3rd time i play a game although i dont tend to play for very long at a time.

EDIT - CPU is clocked at 3.5ghz (48 max load temp) GPU isnt OC'd, latest drivers
