Blackberry Playbook....

I'll be getting one asap..forget the ipad as i think this will rock...been hearing rumours about it from my brother who told me...dont even bother with the ipad...

Why is it all or nothing with most people?

iPad is great. This could be great too (although we'll have to wait and see). Will this being released suddenly make iPad unusable/rubbish. No.

Happy days, more great products!

The device isn't due out until early 2011.
Sod that then, by the end of the year we'll have talbots all over the shop as it is!

Still, it's the OS where things will happen and I look forward to seeing what api's developers will have access to.

How is that any different to most people in the Apple forum? :D

No price yet (it'll be v.expensive) and expect the battery to last a full 'stress free' day (according to Mike Lazaridis)

Forget the iPad/Android comparisons. The real question is.... Can it replace a laptop for suits giving presentations all day long?

Pray do tell what do you know??...seeing as outside RIM employees you would be the first one to know lol...even my brother who works with RIM very closely doesnt have much info on the device yet himself.

He does say that this thing is pretty slick ie thin and 7" inch is just perfect really....the ipad im sorry is just far too big...used my sis in laws ipad that she brought over from Canada and i was not that impressed with it in all fairness.

Having tested OS6 extensively I easily recognised it on the tablet.
It looks to be OS6 with added multitasking via the addition of webOS using the scrolling "page" view. So basically it appears to be the same old same old.

In terms of interface, the OS looks like a mashup of webOS and the BlackBerry OS, even allowing for multitasking via what amounts to a "card" view. Interestingly, RIM and QNX boasted of the PlayBook's multimedia and gaming functions, but Mike Lazaridis also described the tablet as "an amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry."

On a personal note, I am proud to be the first to know this (mandatory lol ).

Is that based on the rumours about it from your brother who doesnt have much info on the device yet himself?

There is plenty of info on the device. Maybe you can point your brother to this thread and he might learn something new.

It's Blackberry's tablet OS, which is based on QNX Neutrino not OS6, and the application platform is basically AIR.

I've put up a rather rambly post over here should anyone wish to read my more thorough thoughts.

I keep saying this, but I'm intrigued by the thing. Battery life is obviously a concern with the CPU the thing's sporting, plus it's obviously smaller than the iPad meaning probably smaller battery. Still, does it NEED to last as long as the iPad? I tend to charge mine every night regardless.

I know people will assume I'm going to be pro-iPad no matter what, but this thing has indeed piqued my interest.

And I'll say it again - competition is good for everyone.

Correct, maybe I should have been clearer and pointed out that it looks very similar to OS6. In terms of appearance and usability.

By the way, got to love that they advertise the support for Flash :D

Wow go you eh??...as for it being like OS6??...not such a bad thing in all honesty...as for my brother??..he knows much more than you would but sadly being restricted by an NDA doesnt allow him to give much more info out.

When you actually work closely with RIM then come back with something more noteworthy;).

What difference does it make to you whether i buy this or an ipad??...ive used the ipad, i didnt see the big hype about it mainly because i found it a bit too large for me to carry around whereas this at 7" is just about right. Neither did i say that the blackberry tablet will make the ipad unusable/rubbish...in fact it will probably make apple sit up and take notice ie improve the specs on the next ipad if they do.

Of course its great that next yr there will be a few tablets out on the market other than the blackberry and ipad...more choice for the consumer but for me because i know how good the blackberry platform is, having used BB's for the past few yrs...its a no brainer for me to get one. Plus added support for flash is a bonus...one thing that annoyed me on my sis in laws ipad is that flash enabled sites werent possible to browse.

Looks like good kit but the name seems a little.... off. Why market it as a business device then call it a "Playbook" ??

Picture the scene, high level business meeting... "let me just get my playbook out" ...

Edit: I work for a company that is partnered with RIM for one of their key services (I am not going to say which) - I just found out that high level people here already knew about and know a lot more but are not allowed to tell :( They have infact had to sign personal NDAs instead of the usual company wide ones like we did for the Samsung Galaxy tablet prototype devices we've had here for a few months.

I actually work closely with RIM... ;)

Why don’t you go and follow your own advice or come back with something noteworthy when YOU actually work with RIM.
Just claiming that your "brother" told you "rumors" (how about some facts) is not very assuring. Especially when this "rumor" is
...this thing is going to truly rock...

Geez...

because i know how good the blackberry platform is

You just lost a lot of credibility there my RIM loving friend.

I just found it laughable that your brother who you admitted doesn't know a lot about the product has said to forget the iPad for this yet to be released device. You must admit that's pretty hilarious?

Really so you work closely with RIM do you??...if thats the case then as i said please do tell us something we dont know;)...the fact that you havent but instantly attacked me says it all about you...that all you are is a lowly phone tester for some network out in Belgium unless im mistaken??.

Oooh a rolleyes such an adult way of debating or having a discussion...its no wonder i read your comments and think to myself what a load cobblers you spout off.

Grow up and come back when you have something more informative to post:).

Chill Spawn, you just look a little upset that someone else has the inside scoop.

well its a step up from being too sanitary towel

thing that concerns me slightly is i have used a blackberry touch screen device before... yuck

and 9" would be better imo. so would android

Well the previous BB touch screens used a click system....this one doesnt use the click system as far i know and have been told...its capacitive like the ipad with full gesture and multi touch capabilities.

In fact i think RIM are doing away with the Storm type click screens as it is.

9" i think is still too big...id like to 7.5" maybe...but then i suppose it depends on how much screen real estate you need.

Based on the specs of the Playbook...i think hes pretty much spot on when he says forget the ipad...hes talking about the first gen of ipads...will be interesting to see what specs the 2nd gen ipad comes out with to compete against the playbook.
