Hi a friend of mine has a Blackberry Bold, not sure which bold, but it is at least 1 year old if not older. anyhow, he somehow deleted BBM and I popped over tonight and tried to download it on his BB through blackberry app world, it downloaded but would not install. even after 2 re-boots.

So i am popping round tomorrow when I have more time in the evening, I thought if I download onto his laptop the latest stuff etc then everything will be ok hopefully. If I do a fresh install.

Can anyone link me to whatever files etc I will need as I can be pretty certain he will have misplaced the cd that came with the blackberry bold when he got it (orange). And do I just download from somewhere desktop manager and then what version do I need for his phone? just so it is all sorted, and I would need to back up his contact details etc before all this.

thanks guys.

Hmmm if you downloaded it through BB appworld then it should have installed...seems like somethings gone wrong ie corrupted....have you checked the download folder and instant messaging folder??..check there for a start and if its not there then id re-install the OS.

Desktop manager is available from the blackberry website.

https://www.blackberry.com/Download...3BB068C22&dl=DA5FB46338C8C0DCB1039F7898184FC5

Just download and install unless he already has it on his pc...check his installed program files etc. If you decide to re-install the OS then make sure you back up all his data etc before doing so as installing an OS wipes the device clean...once your done updating or installing the OS then just restore from the backup you made before.

If you have any problems then go here: www.crackberry.com and you will find a wealth of info and advice if you run into any trouble.

Glad you replied Spawn,

Yes I downloaded from the BB appworld. It is not in the download folder nor IM anywhere.

I have a 8900 so know my way round the BB fairly well.

I shall download desktop manager from that link later.

Any idea of a link to the latest OS for that Bold as well please. Then hopefully when all done should be ok.

Cheers.

Latest official OS is now OS5 on crackberry....i havent had a chance to load it onto my 9000 Bold as its been retired in favour of my 9700 Bold.

But as far as im aware that seems to be the latest firmware is OS5.

Thank you. Shall try it later Spawn, presume the install process is quite straight forward as never done it to a BB. Same as the back up?

Also on another note. My 8900 is running OS version v4.6.1.206 (platform 4.2.0.102)

is it worth updating the OS on that too? or does it not do anything as my 8900 is working fine.

As long as you follow the guide on crackberry it should go without a hitch ie installing the OS then restoring the backup....if he has apps that need activation codes then he will need to re-input them in as they wont carry over when you have done the OS install.

Well its up to you really...OS5 is much better and faster than the OS4.6...plus on some devices the memory management is much better but if your not having any serious issues with the current OS then its up to you. There are a few new improvements within OS5 as it is....im always updating my BB's to the latest OS's.....just one of the things i like doing with my devices.

Spawn, just had a look on that page you linked to.

Which in turn links to a BB page for you to download the OS. Do I choose any or ?

he has just text me with his ver:
v4.6.0.92 (platform 4.0.0.117), cryptographic kernal V3.8.5.42
branding version 1.0.142.26

BB Bold 9000

(on orange)

Just choose the OS thats at the top of the page....that OS you just posted is ancient lol.

But just download the OS thats on the bb page that i linked to...make sure he hasnt got any other OS installed on his laptop/pc...if he does then you need to delete it first then install the new OS.

Heres the link for newest OS: https://www.blackberry.com/Download...sionid=662EC36A7F4D522581681E5FED49F386.node2

Make sure you choose Bold 9000 from the drop down box.

Also heres instructions on how to do the upgrade properly:

Backup your device with Desktop Manager (Download from HERE)

Download the desired device OS (from whatever your source may be and make sure the OS is for your specific device!)

Uninstall all prior OSes from your PC (Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Uninstall Prior OS versions!)

When downgrading you need to make sure all OSes newer than the one you are rolling back to are removed

Install the OS to your PC (run the .exe file)

Delete the vendor.xml file (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader)

Load the OS with AppLoader (using DesktopManager) (Usually takes anywhere between 30min - 1hr)

Restore from Backup in Step 1

cheers spawn there will be no OS on his laptop anyhow as he has just got a new laptop and never installed bb desktop manager.

Although he of course has a OS in the form of vista on his laptop.

Ahh ok well then dont worry about the uninstalling of any BB OS...you can skip that step.

Good luck with the upgrade, shouldnt have any problems...if you do then post back here or head to crackberry.com where people can help you out:).

Worked fine thanks Spawn, cheers for your help and links etc.

All sorted and backed up, restored etc. Everything as it should be. I am sure he will let me know in time if any quicker.

Thanks
