Hi All,

I am building a retro PC to play 3dFX games etc. I purchased a Asus CUSL2 motherboard, however one of the posts on the CPU socket has snapped, However looking at the socket it looks like it may acomodate different fittings in regards to the heatsink and fan, I have the traditional HSF with the fastening bar straight for the middle and connects to two protruding posts, Does anyone know what the alternitive is called?

Kind Regards
Richard

I just checked ebay to see what it looks like and every cooler and motherboard uses those "post's" and clips that look very similar to AMD's method of clipping the heatsink down. I couldn't see any other methods at all.

Although some high end AMD socket 462 / socket A of that vintage had alternative through hole fixings to bolt the HSF to the mobo, socket 370 did not as far as I can tell. You can (or used to) get a 3 hole clip on some heatsinks which may fit the bill.

Otherwise you may find another mobo easier to work with.

i used to have one of those, best p3 board ever made.
if either of the 2 middle ones are snapped i'd say there isnt much hope. the 2 offset lugs were to take some of the stress off the middle ones and wont be strong enough or put pressure on the die correctly. there were only 2 cooler types, the middle lug ones and the middle and offset lug ones.

you could try to make bracket out of metal and screw it to the socket underneath where the lugs are.. effort though.

a 939 athlon 64 bundle can be had for like £20 off ebay, or athlon xp if AGP socket needed.

funny that thought went past my mind of the last few days and have been prowling around the Vogon forums :D Have a Tualatin 1.4 512k somewhere with slocket on a board with ISA etc.. might give that a go. also have a 2mb cache board with K6-3+ 450 @ 600 somewhere too :D As for your problem, might be better off with another board to be honest.

Well managed to secure another Asus CUSL2 motherboard, should be here this week. current spec in progress, 2*voodoo 2 cards in SLI, ATI rage pro 2 2d card(to be swapped for a Nvidia Riva TNT) 256mb of ram, 160gb of harddrive space, Celeron 1ghz CPU and DVD drive etc etc, Windows 98se will be the OS of choice. further enhancements, sound blaster live PCI card and have the original cambridge soundworks speakers and sub from back in the day. im thinking i may build into an Antec case at some point, nothing too fancy.
