range from not terrible to pretty decent in my experience. Depends if you mean a rattly old tape deck in a jetta or something newer.
There are plenty other things I'd choose first. Becker HU if you want the German no nonsense, decent SQ approach

Always liked the Blaupunkt HU i had years back, they can look a little rubbish, but are really easy to use and sound good.
Look poo, but SQ features are excellent on the HU's.they have a more natural sound than Alpine tbh, i had a Bremen unit for a while, the only unit ive heard better than it was a Pioneer 77mp, which was regarded as the best HU this side of £500.
Subs im not so keen on, bit too bright and blingy for my liking, look at their pro range called Velocity, simply outstanding components and subs.

As in Memphis MP66 HU for £150, VPA 1500 Pro amps for £250, VPw 1500 Pro subs for £175 and VPc 652/662 components for £100 per pair - good?

HU yes, amps yes, subs and speakers, no.You can get really good subs and speakers in that price range now.
There are far better subs, speakers and amps made by others and some hu's.
I like my pioneer stuff. It's expensive tho. I'm trying to buy another DEH-p80mp second hand at the moment. Paid £125 for one about 2 years second hand. Today they are still going thru egay at that price or sometimes a bit more
