Just fitted an e6600 into a new PC build last weekend. I put the usual amount of AS5 onto the Zalman 9500. After building the PC, I decided to run the Intel TAT utility to see what the temps were.
45+ under idle and 70~75 under load.
So after doing a bit of digging around, I decided to get the CPu out and have a look at it. The IHS was definately concave, to the naked eye it didn't look too bad, but you could clearly see the contact areas, which were the outer edge of the IHS to the heatsink.
Time for a bit of lapping of the IHS methinks.
Until I do this, I have stuck a blob more AS5 in the centre of the Zalman, i've fired the PC up and my idle temps are now ~35 with a load temp of ~55.
So there you go, in this case Less is NOT more.
So, off to the fine grit sandpaperman I go tomorrow.
