So, now I have had the opportunity to test the infamous new Blizzard chat and friend system where you can communicate with others regardless of game they play or where they play in said game.

For you who are completely oblivious to this, Blizzard has just completed the implementation of Real ID which lets you keep your friends even if they go from World of Warcraft to StarCraft 2 or Diablo 3 and play.

From my point of view it saves a lot of time as I do not have to have a character on every realm, just so I can keep in touch with my buddies. I also do not have to sit and play StarCraft 2 all day long if all my online friends decide they like it more than World of Warcraft (which is the best game of course :p)

For me it saves time, but it is not as good of a solution as I hoped it to be. Feels a bit clumsy.

Anyone else had a chance to test it? Like, Dislike?

I don't really see a need for such a thing. Why can't you just use MSN or Xfire or the Steam overlay?

Calling it a rip off is odd given what it does and that every IM ever made could then be classed as such.

It's built into the game, maybe?

Lots of people don't use, or want to use, voice chat clients to stay in contact with one another ALL the time so RealID gives the option (if you want to use it) to stay in contact with people across realms without having to flick back and forth between chat clients.

xfire and steam work fine in game.

"press two buttons" > click friends name and send message.

Didn't deny they do work fine in-game but if there's the same feature built into the wow client now I would much rather use that than have a separate client running in the background too.

Regardless, it's OPTIONAL.

But the problem is you end up with too many of them. If it's going to be Blizzard games only (as I'd guess it has to be) then you'll still have to sign in to Vent / TS / MSN / Xfire to keep in contact with everyone and then you just end up being swamped in chat clients.

Yeah I see your point but it is optional. Vent/TS is most likely going to always be the most preferable option for raiding.

I can only say my experience with it in starcraft 2 has been pretty poor.

I don't play warcraft or whatever though so I don't know about that.

Had a play around with it last night, like most stuff about it. Was chatting to a couple or RL mates that play on a different server, without having to have xfire up and running, or msn on in the background.

Having said that, if you use the 'invite to conversation feature' you can only have 3 people in the 'room' at the same time, seems kind of low!

Have not really tested everything fully, but I agree with you Archy that the chatroom with maximum 3 people is very low. Maybe they are testing the limitations of it so that the chat won't cause lag or something?

For you personally or is that a global opinion you have decided to base for everyone else too as there are other brands of chat programs?

Why play WoW when there is AION?

Indeed. a lot of people don't have xfire/add the game though steam so they can use the overlay. This is an option Blizz have added to make it easier to chat with people playing blizzard games. Though I imagine they will be releasing a windows client in the future so you don't need to be in-game to chat with them.

Yes, its like xfire, but everyone you know in-game will actually have it.

Blizzard already have a "type" of client where you do not need to be in the game to be able to participate in the game. Genius idea, though I am flabbergasted as to who would ever use that client, specially since you must pay subscription fee and everything to be able to use it.

Because one chat program can connect to people no mater what they're doing and the other only works if you're playing WoW or SC2?

Theres too many choices nowadays...

GFWL
Steam
Ubisofts Uplay or whatever
Battle.net
X-fire
And among others..

There should be a standard imo, like Steam..
