The father in law has onset dementia and has started browsing adult content and is messaging "lonely singles near him'.

Luckily he doesn't have Internet banking as it would only be a matter of time before he starts sending £££'s too.

He is doing this with mum in law in same room at times - it's obvs very upsetting for her.

What can I do to block adult content on an Android phone? I'm not bothered about tracking usage etc, just turning off adult content and maybe even installing a parental control app - any recommendations?

He has done this before, so I blocked and deleted the apps I saw - but he's back at it again!

Ta for any help.

Google has a parental control app as we've got it on my step daughters phone and the wife can control it from her iPhone.
For blocking of the sites do their ISP offer any adult filtering? We've got the option in our TalkTalk account to turn it on. (assuming he's connecting to WiFi in the house) Most mobile networks also offer it though.

Three and Plusnet blocks pr0n by default. I only know this because both networks classed deviantART as a pr0n site. Like, seriously? I had to contact live chat on both networks to switch it off simply so that I could access dA. The same can be done to turn the pr0n filter on.

On android you can install Adblock Plus for free, it installs a browser that is very like Chrome (I think it's based on Chrome) that blocks all ads so the adult ads won't appear. Install that and remove or disable Chrome from the phone so he has to use the Adblock Plus browser for internet browsing.

Adding on to the ABP suggestion, there's other browsers with adblockers too (Brave, Firefox with uBlock Origin, Samsung Internet, Vivaldi, etc) but that itself won't stop him from using Chrome if he's already used to that. You can install ad blocking apps (eg blockoda, adguard, etc) that does create a local VPN to filter traffic but there's nothing stopping him from turning that off too.

You could try the private DNS method since it's a little more buried in the phone settings, I believe Adguard offers it as family.adguard-dns.com but there are also others you can try too. I don't have experience in this so not sure what others to suggest.

Firstly the network provider should be able apply an adult filter when on mobile data, secondly if he's on wifi while at home those filter wont work so you'll need to look at whatever tool the broadband provider offers or look at something like OpenDNS.

I'm on Virgin Media and they have a tool called Websafe which I use to filter out content for my daughter. I just log into the website to manage it from any browser anywhere or via the app on my phone. Its actually pretty good and does the job perfectly for me, I'm sure other providers have similar tools.

However either way a simple VPN will bypass most restrictions if he's so inclined so potentially limiting his ability to install apps might also be advisable via something like Google Family Link.

Private DNS sounds like a good suggestion. You could also a PiHole if the phone is connected to the WiFi, and blacklist sites you don't want him to access. There's probably some pre-made black lists you can import into the PiHole that will stop any p**n sites
