hey guys,

At work we have our own wireless network. There any many other network visable to my users laptops and every couple of days a new one springs up.

Most of the new ones are unsceured networks which the laptops are trying to connect to automaticly. This is causing issues as people loss connection to our network not to mention the huge security risk.

Is there a way to stop windows xp from connecting to any unsecrued wireless network??

There is an option in XP to do this.

From About.com

1. From the Start Menu, open Windows Control Panel

2. Inside Control Panel, click the "Network Connections" option if it exists, otherwise first click "Network and Internet Connections" and then click "Network Connections."

3. Right-click "Wireless Network Connection" and choose "Properties."

4. Click the "Wireless Networks" tab on the Properties page

5. Click the "Advanced" button in this tab

6. Find the "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" setting. If checked, this setting is enabled, otherwise it is disabled.

Sadly that's about all you can do under XP, Vista and 7 have better access control settings.

I'm sure by default XP won't connect to any unsecured wireless network - unless the option above was changed after install.
