I've started this thread a couple of times before, but I'm sure I'm not the only OcUKer that gets annoyed with popups of Web 2.0. They're not the oldskool Web 1.0 ones that pop out in a new browser window. Mozilla/Firefox has been blocking those since 2002. The Web 2.0 popups appear in the same browser window and covers a portion of the screen until you click it off.

The most common version is where it asks you for site feedback or fill in a survey. It appears within 5 seconds of you opening that web site. How the hell can I fill in that in if I've only just visited that site (and never before)?

There seems to be no universal magic bullet for these, but I have found a couple of individual solutions. Unfortunately, it seems that each web site requires a different solution.

The BBC News popup. What's the point of it? Typically, I'll see it 3 times during a single lunch break, and it's ALWAYS for the same breaking article. When I dismiss the breaking popup, it takes me back to the top of the page that I was reading, so that I lose my place on the page.

Here's how to get rid of it!!

Add 127.0.0.1 polling.bbc.co.uk to your HOSTs file. That's it :-)

Here's another one: if you're not logged into Pinterest, it will nag you to sign in via Facebook or Google+ or make an account with Pinterest. It prevents you from seeing more images off Pinterest. However, this login request is purely artificial. It's just there to hinder you. If you're a Firefox or Chrome user, add "Pinterest without registration" to Greasemonkey, and boom, it's gone.

Have you guys got any solutions for other sites? General discussion really :-) Think they're called modal overlays, used in JavaScript.

On the Daily Mash, it looks like this. Nothing even there on the popup, just blank!

Good idea for thread.

Some of the ones that annoy me are the "do you need some help?" pop ups on the likes of the RS and Screwfix sites. NO, DAMNIT!

I use Ublock Origin on Palemoon browser.
Any time something like that pops its ugly little head up...

R'click the offending item,
Click "Block element".
Mouse down to bottom right & click "create".
Job's a good 'un.

Although some times, may need to do a few of these to hide each element the site uses, but works a treat.
