Blocked Ports

I had talked about this in a previous thread but that tgread is no longer suitable now that I've uncovered more about the problem.

I'm using a laptop and it seems unable to use any ports other than port 80.

I have tried disabling the window's firewall and McAfee all to no avail.

I can't see any other pieces of software that might be blocking ports - anybody got any ideas?

Can you describe how it's only using port 80?

What are you trying to use the laptop for? Is it running a webserver or do you mean that you can only use it to access web pages?

It will not access ftp or email...

Also, it will not access 'secure' websites. It will not log into any but the most rudimentary of login systems.

The lack of ping response is another sign that only port 80 is allowing packets

Sounds like something other than ports. When accessing a website you open a port other than 80 to the outside world. Port 80 is used by the webserver the other end to accept connections.

Could it be a DNS issue?

Whatever happens, I think it is a piece of software denying access. When trying to use a cabled connection to the router it comes up with a message saying that it is blocked and to call an administrator - this does not happen with any other device connected to the router and the router has no such setting that I am aware of.

Any attempt to access the internet other than through a browser is fruitless. Any ideas how I'd check out my software theory or have any of your own? As websites can be accessed I don't see how it would be a DNS issue as the IP address is the same whether you're pinging or browsing.

I have updated the driver for the adapter, I have reinstalled then uninstalled Windows Defender and turned off the Windows Firewall.

I'm certain this must be a port blocking issue but I can't seem to track it down. If this carries on much longer I'm going to have to format and reinstall - somebody help me please this driving me bloody nuts!

The blocked message when using a cable, what is generating that?
What router do you use?
Screen shot of the message maybe?

What's generating it I'm not totally sure. A screen shot will show you very little, when in IE instead of coming up with a web page it comes up with a text webpage saying that the site is blocked, contact your administrator, the text moves but is fairly uninteresting. The router (made by PTI) does not seem to be the originator of this message which leads me to believe that there is a piece of software on the laptop.

Does anyone know if there's any software that will display the various pieces of software blocking ports et al in windows XP?

Have you done a full scan for adware/spyware?

Also check IE connection settings to make sure it's not pointing to some random proxy server.

Found out what the problem was - I might have known - Micro$oft...

I removed all the Windows Updates and it magically started working again, looks like I have another good story to tell people when I'm advising to disable windows updates!
