I have only recently started using WiFi since I have a superhub fitted and always been hardwired throughout the house.
My problem is that all too often my laptop (if used WiFi) picks up a neighbours unsecured connection rather than my own. This is no big deal except I want to play a film off my network> I also do not know if you can inherit spyware or viruses if tapped into another persons network.
So my question is a) are you vulnerable to viruses etc, and b) how can I bar my network from choosing that connection in preference to my own.

Depending on the OS your using, you can nearly always right click on the network and say forget. A PC etc should only latch onto that network if you have specifically told them to connect in the past.

A) no
b) tell your laptop to forget that network, it is connecting to it because you connected to it in the past, once you connect to a network it remembers the network and connects again automatically from then on. delete it from your network connections and it will no longer connect to it unless you choose to connect to it again.
