Hi,

I use utorrent for download linux etc but my youngest brother is staying with me and I've had 2 warning emails about downloading unauthorised stuff.

I have tried to block the port it uses and the application itself using inbound and outbound rules in Windows 7 firewall after reading some guides online but upon loading utorrent it can still download.

I've opened the admin panel for my Netgear DG834Gv3 router and created a new service for Utorrent (tcp/udp) on port 15050 as that is the port it is set to use. I've then gone in to firewall rules and set the service to BLOCK ALWAYS on both inbound and outbound services. It is still downloading!

Is there something I am missing here? Other than ripping his arm off and beating him to death I just need to be able to turn utorrents access to the internet off and on when I need it!

Tell him not to do it or you'll beat him silly with a 5 foot pole? :)

But seriously, just tell him straight. If he still does it..beat him. :D

put the ip's being used in the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc to stop access, downside is there could be many. If you stop the software seeding you won't be getting emails about using it, seeding is the giveaway.

1. This should be in networking.

2. You cannot block utorrent, if you leave just 1 port open it will function.

Although to answer the question that's just the port the client send to the dht so that other can find it. It doesn't have to use it because it can establish a connection with another client of their port and use it. What you also missed would be teredo tunnelling ipv6 which again, you can't do anything about without causing other problems. Yes, you could disable it, but ipv6 will finally become the standard before winter, so turning it off will break more than it fixes.

Thing you probably should do is ascertain what he did, then contest any such email with the isp (they can't prove jack), ensure utorrent is using forced encryption (consider news groups) and find an isp that care about you more than sleeping with the lawyers trying to make money off it's customers. Wcs you need to use a vpn to download anything without being accused (read lawyer profiteering) or anything, which is what someone people have to do. You sure you've not got an virus/malware downloading crap? You're networks secure an the wifi hasn't got anyone piggybacking on it? Is the isp sure? :p

Eduction is the best solution. Ironic given the threats.

Doesn't uTorrent have an option to automatically punch holes in the firewall via uPNP.

If you use different log ins, change the NTFS permissions on the .exe to explicit deny for his user account. Also, using local policy, disable his access to add / remove programs. Hell, even the whole of control panel.

you can manually set a port in utorrent aswell im using 6112 :)

Thought several of use already covered that

Editing permissions will work certainly, however removing his install rights is the only way to stop him installing another client. Not sure what you could do to stop him just using a phone/ds etc. instead.

As I said, Education.
