Blocking websites on Asus RT-N66U

Blocking minecraft? Your house sounds like a bundle of fun. :)

There will be options within the router itself no doubt but I don't have that router. Probably under security or firewall rules.

They don't have pc or laptop. They had tablets which met my size 11's and 16 stone not just due to Minecraft. They have phones and are always on youtube watching it!

My youngest spent 6 hours just watching Youtube and some grown muppet playing the game

I'm not going to tell you how to deal with your kids - that's your issue, however I would seriously consider dealing with your own "issues" if you had to resort to smashing up tablets etc - just to stop kids watching youtube etc.

Just stamp on the router. Size 11's and 16 stone should stop them accessing any websites.

Also, if they're using phones, chances are they may be using mobile data, not wi-fi?

Need to block some websites at home from the kids.

Have an Asus RT-N66U

One site is https://minecraft.net

Any ideas how

You wont be able to block minecraft.net through your router because its HTTPS.

Limitations of the filtering function :
1. Compressed webpages that use HTTP compression technology cannot be filtered. See here for more details.
2. Https webpages cannot be filtered.

This is what 50% of youtube is. Minecraft videos!

Use OpenDNS and blacklist it if you must. Put the OpenDNS details into your router. You'll could be there forever and a day adding new and unusual sites to block if you go down this route.

It won't do content filtering, so it can block access to a whole site, but it won't decide to let you on a site, but then block just bits of it, so Youtube is gonna be all or nothing.

Might just look at blocking there IP then

What about setting a timer with password for e.g. 2 hours and set it to reset after 12-24h of the last lock.

P.s How old are your children?

I remember a program which blocks specific context by finding key words like GAMING etc. I'll have a look as I can't remember what is was called...
You could try THIS . But I don't think it allows you to go on youtube at all...

I thought it was possible to restrict access to the Asus routers with time restrictions? I.e if they're staying up all night watching them rather than going to sleep, you'd be able to restrict access after say 11pm?

Never looked into it, but I really can't imagine theres a way to block by content on youtube, unless youtube itself has an account based parental control feature.

Maybe on sonicwall type setups, but filtering by URL on youtube doesn't work, unless it's to block specific videos, and even then there would be ways round it.

something like DDWRT or Tomato custom firmware does allow blocking of sites via IPtables or the in built content filtering.

I can block "youtube" from the Asus router, but I don't want to do that as I also watch youtube. It's just some videos I want to block. I tried OpenDNS, but it only blocks the whole youtube site just like in the router. I have asked OpenDNS of this facility and the person who responded said she will forward it to the "team"... but I wouldn't imagine it is going to happen very soon.

I have tried keyword filter on the router, but it does not work. I remember using this type of filter when I had a Belkin router and it worked IIRC....

Just remove their internet access entirely until you're satisfied they've learnt whatever lesson you're trying to teach them?
