So I want to make a Blog. Yes, I know it seems everyone wants to make a blog these days, but I really do have a lot of time to burn and I might as well give it a go. I'm not in it for monetisation; I just want to keep myself writing about topics that interest me.

I have a few areas of interest - pc gaming, books, movies, television and anime - which I think might be a bit too much for a single Blog. Do you think it would be too difficult to keep people interested in a Blog that covers this many topics? Should I condense it to just PC Gaming etc? At the moment, the most difficult hurdle I have is coming up with a Blog name that is relevant to all those topics. If I was to simplify the topic list it would definitely be easier, but I feel like I would be sacrificing a lot of what I want to write about.

Wordpress looks like a good place to start, but I can't seem to find any concrete information pertaining to using your own domain name and hosting services. I understand how to edit/update and post new content to your Wordpress Blog when using their self-contained service, but how do you go about doing all of this if you were to purchase a specific domain/hosting service?

Will I need a program like Dreamweaver, or some other form of Website Development software? Forgive me for sounding like a complete newbie, but I've wasted most of my life playing video-games, reading books and watching movies, rather than doing anything useful like actually learning to use my computer!

Are there any step by step tutorials that specifically details how to create your own basic theme - nothing special, just plug-in your choice of images and graphics - and upload it to a hosting service, and how to add content to it over a period of time?

Has anyone here managed, or is currently managing, their own Blog? Do you have any tips? I already have a lot of Documents saved from when I used to post things around the web, on different forums; I have content ready to upload in one place, I just need a blog and somewhere to do it. I would just rather not use the ".wordpress.com" domain.

Have you thought about wordpress.com?

It allows you to log in and create one of your own blogs without the hassle.

I believe you can also assign your own domain to it too.

Why yes, yes I have actually :P

I wasn't aware you could add your own domain, which is definitely interesting - but wouldn't there still be all the limitations of having it "hosted" on Wordpress?

Edit: Yes :(

"Important Notes Before Upgrading

Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service."

Edited my post sorry, missed out the link!

Now you've edited your post! Oh the confusion!

With wordpress being so popular there's a lot of templates out there all ready to use after you simply install wordpress to your FTP / Database host. I usually use www.themeforest.net and pick something out thats relevant to the content that's going to be on it.
The tutorials and short codes that come with the better themes allow you to do all the work in the admin panel so you won't need to touch any code if thats not something you want to get into.

Thanks Hutchy. It's just I'd rather not have my Blog hosted by Wordpress. Mapping the domain name certainly helps give my Blog a more authentic feel, but I would rather not be limited by the Wordpresss hosting solution.

I am just confused with how you are supposed to "use" your own hosting service, and how you would add to your Blog. When you use Wordpress to do all this, it's as easy as logging into your Wordpress account - like Facebook - and writing a few words and clicking post. As far as I am aware, if you were to use your own hosting service, this would become a whole lot more difficult, and I am not sure where to start.

yahoo web hosting also has a wordpress option, all you have to do is enable it - but you can also install a proper version of wordpress onto the server, it's actually very easy to do, even i managed!

and all you have to do is find a theme you like (there's thousands of them) then updating the site is a piece of .... you don't have to worry about how it looks, you just input the content and then the stylesheet formats everything to your theme
