Hey guys, i need a bit of help.. twice now in the space of 2 weeks, the fuse for the fuel pump has blown on my car (mark 1 2001 ford focus 1.6 ghia). After the fuse first blew/went i replaced it and then 8 days latter it went again. Then on wednesday it blew again. Both times the fuse has went when driving off again after stopping (didn't switch off the engine). Anyone know what can be causing this?
Thanks in advance guys :)

Fuel pump is on its way out probably.

Just happens that the condition which triggers it to draw the most current is when you set off like that.

ouch, a fuel pump costs abot £200 as well :(
I phoned a local garage this afternoon and they said it might be a wiring issue??

oh yes.. one thing.. there is a current going through the fuel fuse all the time when the car is on.. i am correct in thinking that that shouldn't be the case, there should only be a current passing through on startup??

Current will flow when the pump runs, which is:
-For a few seconds after switching on the ignition.
-When the engine is running (including cranking).

Get a pump from a scrap yard. It may be a wiring issue, but I wouldn't have thought so otherwise it would go straight away?

Sounds more likely to be a wiring issue to me. Had a similar problem a while ago, if i went around a corner or a bumpy road it'd starve of fuel then cut back in and blow the fuse. Turned out that the plug wasn't making good contact with the fuel pump and moving slightly, blowing the fuse a lot!

Fuel Pump
Part Number: 441590081
£56.09
In Stock
(Ready for Immediate Dispatch)

Euro car parts have fuel pumps for your car for £56 for next day delivery...nothing on a focus costs more than about 50p, its why they are so good as cheap runarounds.

I phoned eurocarparts last week.. that part is wrongly listed unfortunately grrrrrrr

i phoned grays the local motor factor.. they were said it was an item that they had to order in and was something like £220 (the complete fuel pump package).. I will look at the car on saturday and check the connections on the existing fuel pump

The complete assembly includes a big plastic structure and the fuel level sensor IIRC, it's quite possible to reuse all this and just replace the pump.

Could be the wiring if its starting to rub through on something.
If the wiring was completly rubbed through then it would pop straight away but maybe its just rubbing now and again...

i plan to try look for this during the weekend.. hopefully it won't be snowing or raining as i have no garage
