hi all.

after upgrading my old system with a new cpu a w3690 and 2x 780ti. and overclocking them after adding water cooling. I managed to get 5ghz from the cpu and 1480 on the gpus. I the noticed the 24gb was now only showing 16gb. so took 3 modules out to check. now it wont boot. the p6x58d premium just starts for and instance the goes off. thought id blown the 1000w antec psu as overclocking probably exceeded that. so put a 2000w super flower on. still nothing. turns out the psu is okay so must be the mobo.

anyway. time to move on. so what do I buy today. 2011? 1151 skylake?
which mobo is best for overclocking going to have to stay with the 2 780ti, might add a third in sli.
water cooling a must. id prefer 2x m2 slots for raiding them, is it a good idea does it make much difference?

using windows 10. atm got samsung 850 pro, not impressed, a few harddisks in there.
so what do you all recommend?

thanks in advance

Skylake is best for IPC but if you are doing more than gaming then the 5820k is also decent. When I thought my motherboard died I was going to go with a 6700k. X99 has more PCIE lanes for x16 x16 crossfire/sli and z170 does x8/x8.

the case is a corsair 800d. big. connected to hailea 1500 water chiller I game and do some database work.
meh decisions z170 x8/x8 , nice and new...or x99 x16/x16 older

but I enjoy overclocking it most of all. it just appeals to my inner geek/how far can I push it.

Bear in mind that X99 only does 16/16 SLI if you have a 40 lane CPU. The 5820K and 6800K are only 28 lane CPUs, so can only do 16/8 or 8/8 or 8/8/8 SLI.

thinking of getting the asus maximus 8 rog extreme assembly with the ek watercooling block. a pcie m2 or u.2 ssd. trying to work out which ram. and I guess 6700k cpu.

Oh, if you don't have the SATA3 version, you might want a new case too, my 800D has been retired due to only being the SATA2 drive bays and not wanting to mess about with feeding cables into the bays.

Pity as it's still a nice case, but cheaper to buy a new case than import the only upgrades from Australia!

SATA2 drive bays??? Drives are either 2.5" or 3.5". There's no such thing as a SATA3 drive bay unless I'm mistaken.

SSD bays are 2.5", but you can get 3.5" adapters or just leave them hanging as SSDs have no moving parts.

My 800d is the sata3 one. The w3690 was running sweet at 4.7ghz. With the ram at 2083. But only showing 16gb of 24gb useable ram. So turned it off. Took a few sticks out. It restarted but wouldn't post. Turned it off. Put in 1 stick. Restarted posted. Turned off and started cycling through sticks. About 3 later just got the momentary start turn off. My guess is the PSU a 1000watt couldn't cope and surged damaging at least the mobo. I then calculated that a 1500 watt would have been absolutely the minimum. Doh.
