Blown double glazing - can't see beading to remove though?

One of the glazing units has blown in one of the spare bedrooms. I would normally just look at getting a replacement glazed pane to go in it but I can't see a bead to remove to take the existing one out.

The double glazing itself doesn't look new but then again doesn't look a million years old. Was there a period in time where they didn't come with beading to change the panes or am I being dense and there is a bead there, its just not as obvious as newer UPVC double glazing? I've looked on the outside of the window too and can't see anything that looks like it can be popped out.

A photo will help.

Was just typing about a pic.

I can't see no beeding but I'm no expert on Windows , if you don't get an answer then get somone to give you a quote or take the pic to the window makers there tell you.

Not an expert but two options:

1. check the external of the windows too - some windows I think can be externally beaded.
2. Failing that, I think the beading is that black rubber seal around the edge which has to be pulled out.

Yep, I'm a donut, it's externally beaded from the looks of it. I couldn't quite see it on the upstairs window but I had a look at the downstairs as they all look the same and there is a bead.

Next question then, is it simply a case of finding the size of the pane and then getting a quote from a glazer for a new one to replace? Are they a pretty standard swap out or do they come in different thicknesses etc?

Pop the beads off and it should be pretty straight forward to measure accurately. I found a local glass bloke who will sell to order pretty inexpensively and doesn't need volume (i.e. us minions can ping him).

In Birmingham there is Shard End glass who are a similar Customer facing business.

Different thicknesses.
Just measure the max it can be IE the beading.

It's somewhat a good idea to change to internally beaded ones though.

Might just get a few quotes for someone to actually come and do it all for us.
I don't have any ladders big enough to safely get up to the first floor and it won't be possible to do it from the inside so I will see how much a few local people are quoting to do it.

I did a rough quote online and one website was saying around £68-£70 for just the pane - so thats a starter for my comparisons.

Yeah the panes are pretty inexpensive. I think my friend had 5 or so done and he paid £400 on top of cost for the service. You'll also need a FENSA certificate if you are planning on selling which if you don't will cost ~£250 for indemnity insurance.

To the best of my knowledge FENSA certs aren't required if you are just replacing glass/glazing.

If they were, I would probably just omit mentioning that a pane had been replaced!

I'm a bit late but those look identical to our windows which are externally beaded. We've had a few blown units done over the years.

I'd suggest getting the glazier to come round and do the measurements themselves, including thickness - then anything wrong is their problem. "Up north" I'd be expecting to pay ~£100. Its less than a 10 minute job maybe 15 when ladders are needed. A local firm should be able to sort you out and its a nice easy filler job for them if you're flexible on day and time.

Had a couple quotes in, one £82 and one £90 so will wait for a couple more to come through but that's fairly reasonable when I was being quoted around £70 online for a pane.

If I had ladders I'd do it myself but as you say, worthwhile paying the extra for a pro to measure, fit and be responsible for ordering etc!

i know it's crazy .. but had a guy off facebook ..give me a quote .. replaced back door. back bed window. patio door pane .main bed pane. fixed box room and bathroom window handles ... £650 great service .. might be worth a look in your area ?

I've got to do this on one of mine. Silly question maybe but why are some externally beaded? A thief could whip off the beading and pull the pane out in seconds? Do they only do this on second floor windows due to this? I don't really understand why since it's easier surely to do from the inside?

older units were mostly external for some reason .. the one i had replaced was 15 yrs+ old .. as was the back door .. maybe less crime back then
